Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi is keeping the game’s ending hidden, even as fans try to work out whether the final chapter will closely follow the 1997 RPG or take the remake trilogy in a new direction.
Hamaguchi told Automaton that he has not told any media outlet what conclusion Revelation will have. He also asked players not to judge the entire project only by its final moments.
“I don’t want people to focus just on the ending,” Hamaguchi said. His goal is for players to look back at the full trilogy and feel glad that Square Enix made the remake series, or that they were able to see it through to the end.
That leaves the door open for almost any outcome. “The ending might be fully faithful to the original, or it might end up being something completely different,” Hamaguchi explained. “Or perhaps, it might go in a direction no one could have imagined in the first place. I’d like everyone to experience it for themselves.”
The interview also addressed whether the finale could connect with Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. Hamaguchi did not rule out that possibility, and described the Remake project as part of a broader continuity incorporating Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, and Crisis Core. Those connections include considerations around the ending, but he did not explain exactly how they will work or confirm that Revelation will lead directly into Advent Children.
The remake project has already changed key parts of the original story, so the final installment does not have to recreate its conclusion scene for scene. The 1997 game’s ending remains closely associated with Cloud’s Omnislash and the Planet’s response to Sephiroth, but Hamaguchi is not confirming whether those moments will return in the same form.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 on PS5. Square Enix also has not decided whether the game will receive a traditional physical edition, according to details from a previous interview about the project. Fans may have to wait a while longer before learning whether the remake trilogy will finish as a faithful retelling or with a final surprise of its own.
