Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Lighting Finally Gets the Fan-Made Fix It Needed

David "dddd5" Matos' Shader Injector mod changes shadows, reflections, and other lighting effects in the PC version of Square Enix's RPG.

A solo modder has spent the past two years addressing one of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth‘s most distracting visual problems. David “dddd5” Matos’ Shader Injector mod gives the game’s lighting, shadows, and reflections a major visual overhaul on PC.

The project was recently updated with a couple of fixes, and comparisons shared by the community show a clear difference between the default presentation and the modified shaders. The mod also continues to attract attention from players looking for a cleaner-looking version of the RPG.

Matos describes the Shader Injector on Nexus Mods as a framework for injecting modified shaders into the game’s rendering API. Its included shader changes target lighting and shadow quality throughout Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

The unmodified game has several lighting quirks. Some light sources do not cast shadows, foliage can appear without proper shading, and certain shadows look noticeably rough. Character faces can also receive strange-looking lighting when Cloud and the rest of the cast are outside.

The difference is especially visible in areas such as the Gold Saucer, where brighter surfaces and reflections benefit from the altered lighting. A recent Shader Injector 2.0 release also added revised reflections, experimental screen-space global illumination, ambient occlusion support, and a work-in-progress ocean shader.

Players have responded positively to the changes. One Reddit user described the game’s original overexposure as “f** unbearable,” while another praised the mod’s visual results and said its performance-focused option costs only a few frames.

The next entry in the series, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, is scheduled for sometime in 2027. For players who plan to return to the remake series on PC, this fan project offers a way to address Rebirth’s rougher lighting before then.
