Fallout 4 Mod Targets the Stutters You Feel While Exploring

Smoother Cell Loading batches NPC, weapon, and animation resources during area loading, though texture-related stutters can still remain.

Fallout 4 has received a new performance mod aimed at one of the game’s most distracting problems: the stutters that appear when moving into newly loaded areas. Modder Zzyxzz released Smoother Cell Loading, which targets the resource-loading spikes behind much of the game’s traversal hitching.

As Fallout 4 loads a new cell, it prepares a large number of NPC, weapon, and animation resources. Processing those requests one after another can create sudden CPU and scheduling spikes, especially in cities and other dense locations where many objects need to appear at once.

How Smoother Cell Loading reduces traversal stutters

The mod changes how those requests are handled by batching the resource queue during cell loading. Rather than allowing the game to process a burst of individual tasks all at once, it spreads that work into a smoother sequence. The result should be fewer sharp hitches when crossing into a new area.

Texture loading is outside the mod’s scope, so some traversal stutters can still occur. Even with that limitation, Smoother Cell Loading is designed to address most of the hitching caused by the game’s cell-loading process.

The mod is available through its Nexus Mods page. A video from Zzyxzz compares Fallout 4 without the mod against gameplay with it enabled, giving players a direct look at the difference during traversal.

For players building a heavily modified setup, the release joins other Fallout 4 performance projects, including the AMD FSR 3 frame generation mod covered by us previously.
