EA Sports FC 27 Gameplay Deep Dive Highlights Manual Defending and Smarter Attacks
The upcoming football game will feature more manual defending, precise passing, revised PlayStyles, new attacking-run commands, and separate early-access and Standard Edition rollout dates, while the Ultimate Plus Edition includes bonus FC Points and Premium Pass access for early buyers.

EA has released a gameplay deep dive for EA SPORTS FC 27, focusing on manual defending, smarter attacking movement, and other changes shaped by community feedback.
The presentation is available through EA’s official Steam announcement. A separate EA SPORTS FC 27 gameplay presentation outlines the changes in more detail, with the announced systems focused on Competitive gameplay. EA’s official pitch notes provide additional details about the update. EA said more information about Authentic Gameplay will arrive in a future Career Mode presentation.
EA SPORTS FC 27 is scheduled to begin its rollout on September 18, 2026 for eligible early-access players, while the Standard Edition is scheduled to follow on September 25, 2026. The gameplay changes cover AI defending, manual tackles, corner kicks, crossing, attacking movement, passing, dribbling, and the balance between PlayStyles and player Attributes.
Manual defending takes a larger role
In Competitive gameplay, AI-controlled defenders will no longer automatically attempt to win the ball whenever a dribbler comes close. Instead, they will focus on positioning and supporting the play until the user switches to them and chooses when to tackle.
AI defenders can still collect a loose ball within reach or gain possession when a dribbler runs directly into them. Those situations are reactions to the ball or the collision, rather than automatic tackles initiated by the defender. AI defenders will also have less reach when attempting interceptions, while manually controlled defenders will cover more ground.
Manual defending itself is receiving several improvements. Controlled defenders will have faster jockey movement than they did in FC 26, and manually triggered stand tackles will cover a greater range. Teammate Contain is also being adjusted: AI teammates will mark the ball carrier from a little farther away, meaning users will need to switch to that player when they want to apply closer pressure.
Corner kicks and crosses require more control
Direct corner kicks will give attackers a short period to prepare before the delivery reaches the box. After choosing the target area, users will be able to move and switch players, trigger runs, shield, and use the new Avoidance mechanic. Avoidance lets a controlled attacker or defender move through crowded areas with less chance of being blocked by an opposing player. The command is hold R1 on PlayStation or hold RB on Xbox. Short corners will not use this camera and control change.
Players contesting a corner will also stop automatically moving into the best position for the ball. Users will need to time the run, attack the space, and make contact manually. Crosses will target open space more often instead of locking onto a specific teammate, while aim and power will have a larger effect on where the ball lands. Headers and other finishes should also have more variety, making accurate contact more rewarding than in FC 26.
New run commands give attackers more options
EA’s attacking AI will use Attacking Spatial Awareness to read nearby space, defensive positioning, and the offside line when making more contextual curved runs. Players can also trigger two new types of off-ball movement. Triggered Curved Runs send a player along a bent path toward open space with Tap L1 + R1 on PlayStation or LB + RB on Xbox.
Pass & Follow Runs let the passer continue with a curved movement after giving the ball to a teammate. The command is L1 + R1 + X on PlayStation or LB + RB + A on Xbox. Both commands can take longer than a direct run because of their curved paths.
Manually triggered runs will also have a limited distance. Once the player reaches that range, they will stop and return to their positional responsibilities, although users can trigger the run again. Unprompted creative runs are receiving changes as well, such as a winger staying level with the defensive line before curving into the box after the pass is played.
Passing and dribbling changes
Ground and lobbed through passes will follow directional input more closely instead of steering heavily toward open lanes away from the player’s aim. Ground and through Dinked Passes are moving to a fully manual system, making aim and power more important.
Some high-level dribblers will be able to keep control after being knocked off balance. Off-Balance Dribbling uses Balance, Agility, and Dribbling Attributes; when a qualified player takes a bump, collision, or shoulder challenge, users can continue moving them while they recover through a stumbling animation. The feature will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
PlayStyles will rely more on Attributes
EA is reducing the gap between PlayStyles, PlayStyle+, and base player Attributes. The changes affect Finesse Shot, Technical Dribbler, Intercept, Rapid, Quick Step, Pinged Pass, Tiki Taka, Jockey, Precision Header, and Low Driven.
Attributes will have a larger effect on Finesse Shot results, while the difference between standard and plus versions of Technical Dribbler, Precision Header, and other abilities will be reduced. Players with high Interceptions Attributes but no Intercept PlayStyle will receive greater reach and improved possession retention. The animation and acceleration boosts for Rapid, Quick Step, and Jockey will be reduced, giving Attributes more influence.
Pinged Pass and Tiki Taka will lose some trap-error reductions, while Tiki Taka will also lose its animation-speed boost. Low Driven will no longer provide a shot-speed boost; velocity will instead depend on shooting Attributes and input power. Both Low Driven PlayStyle levels will continue to improve accuracy.
Pre-purchase bonuses
Players who pre-purchase the EA SPORTS FC 27 Ultimate Plus Edition by August 31 can receive up to 10,000 FC Points distributed across five months, along with Seasons 1 through 5 of the Premium Pass and other bonuses.
The deep dive gives players an early look at the direction of FC 27 before launch details are fully available.
