Diablo 4 has seen many updates since its release, but its earliest dungeons have mostly stayed the same. That’s about to change in the upcoming season, which will breathe new life into those often overlooked areas by turning them into more interesting, loot-focused challenges.
In the following season, called Sins of the Horadrim, Nightmare Dungeons won’t just be a stepping stone during leveling. Instead, they’ll become a key source for crafting materials and helpful loot, offering a fresh reason to go back in even after you’ve hit the endgame.
Here’s the twist: within Nightmare Dungeons, players will find portals to Horadric Strongrooms, mini-arenas packed with monsters. Clearing these quickly rewards you with loot, and you get to pick the kind of rewards you want. It’s a neat way to add some choice and pace to dungeon runs.
These Strongrooms drop keys that unlock Escalating Nightmares, essentially a sequence of three Nightmare Dungeons that ramp up in difficulty and rewards. The showdown is a boss fight against a powered-up version of Astaroth, a familiar foe from the original campaign. Quite the throwback, right?
One thing I find interesting is that these changes aim to make Nightmare Dungeons a lasting part of the game’s loop, not just a brief phase. I missed the days when you could take your time exploring dungeons without racing against a clock and still find some powerful gear along the way.
Alongside these dungeon updates, Sins of the Horadrim introduces a new set of magical spells. One example is a shower of exploding stars that can also break those pesky walls some enemies create. It’s a fresh level of customization for seasonal powers, which probably means players will find some wild combinations to experiment with.
The new season arrives on July 1. If you want a full run-down of what’s coming, Blizzard’s official announcement post has all the details: Purge the Sins of the Horadrim.
