Cloud Imperium Games Faces Major Leadership Changes to Meet Expectations

Star Citizen developer shakes up management as deadlines loom.

Okay, folks, get ready because there is some exciting news from the Star Citizen camp! It seems like Cloud Imperium Games is shaking things up in a big way. Imagine your favorite game studio suddenly deciding to rearrange its entire living room just before guests arrive; that’s what’s happening here!

The buzz around the office is that several top-level executives have been shown the door while others are being shifted into new roles. It’s like musical chairs but with much more pressure and fewer party hats. Sources close to the situation (who prefer to stay anonymous) spilled the tea on this significant overhaul to get those long-awaited titles, Star Citizen and Squadron 42, out the door.

This shake-up began earlier this month after head honcho Chris Roberts dropped an internal memo following his annual “Letter from the Chairman.“ There were also layoffs back in November 2024, mainly affecting staff in QA as part of their restructuring efforts. Yikes!

I mean, can you imagine working at a place where everything changes overnight?

Chris said something significant in his announcement to staff: “To realize this laser focus [of meeting the release of SQ42 and Star Citizen 1.0], it is more important than ever to guarantee we have high-efficiency and efficient teams working throughout the company.” Sounds pretty serious! He’s all about ensuring they have the right people in the right roles, which makes sense, given how much anticipation there is for these games.

Rumors suggest that Sandi Gardiner, Chris’ wife and former employee who left in May 2019 but stayed on as a director, might be returning in a more significant role. Now, that’s what I call family ties!
