Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will target 90 FPS on recommended PC hardware when it launches October 23. The PC version will also include more than 800 customization options, ray tracing across its major modes, a built-in benchmark tool, and a new single-life multiplayer mode called Collateral.
Call of Duty’s PC tech update details how Infinity Ward and Beenox are preparing the game for a wide range of systems. The release will arrive on Xbox on PC, Battle.net, and Steam.
Modern Warfare 4 will support a wide range of PC setups
PC players will be able to adjust graphics, gameplay, input, interface, and other settings to match their hardware. The game will automatically configure settings based on a system’s components, while support for 4K, 1440p, 1080p, standard, and ultrawide displays will cover a wide range of monitors.
- Upscaling options: AMD FSR Redstone, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, Intel XeSS 3, and Filmic SMAA T2X.
- Security: RICOCHET Anti-Cheat will combine server-side detection, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot support, investigations, and legal action. Two-factor authentication and email verification will also be available for account security.
- Input support: Sub-frame mouse polling will improve aiming precision, alongside support for a range of input devices.
Players will also receive a new global sharpness slider for upscalers, new shading quality controls, and expanded settings for screen-space reflections, shadow filtering, occlusion, and screen-space lighting.
Visibility changes focus on clearer gunfights
Enhanced FOV will be exclusive to PC. The option uses lens effects to widen the view near the edges of the monitor without changing the center field of view, giving players more peripheral awareness without requiring a larger overall FOV.
HDR10+ will adjust contrast and lighting in real time according to the display’s brightness settings. Weapon muzzle effects will also be masked around the point of aim so targets remain visible without removing the intensity of the effects.
Depth of Field will be divided into World Depth of Field and Weapon Depth of Field. Players who want a sharper environment can turn down the world effect while keeping the visual effect associated with aiming a weapon.
Weapon bloom will also work differently. Bullets will be fired according to the weapon’s barrel position in both aiming-down-sights and hipfire stances instead of landing randomly within a broader area. A laser attachment can provide an extra visual indication of where shots are traveling.
Benchmark tools and faster updates will support PC performance
The built-in Benchmark Tool will run a simulated multiplayer sequence and report Average FPS, CPU usage, GPU usage, ping, and input latency. Afterward, players will receive a breakdown for the full sequence and individual zones, along with setting suggestions for different scenarios.
Ray tracing will be available in Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ. The recommended PC specification targets 90 FPS in Multiplayer on High settings without requiring manual adjustments to reach that performance target.
Advanced Shader Delivery, previously called Shader Preloading, will deliver precompiled shaders across supported PC platforms. The Xbox PC app will be required to use the feature, even when the game is installed through another supported PC platform. Call of Duty also recommends downloading the latest graphics drivers before launch.
Updates will no longer require a restart during the game’s boot process. Players who are already in a match will still need to restart when an update goes live, with that restart expected to occur between matches. Menu changes will also reduce the steps needed to reach a match.
Collateral adds cash-based rounds to Multiplayer
Collateral is designed for players who enjoy Search and Destroy and other competitive formats. Teams will alternate between attacking and defending two bomb sites, with every player starting each match with a pistol. Eliminations and objective play will earn cash that can be spent on upgrades between rounds.
Available purchases will include Armor Vest, Battle Hardened, Lethal Reach, Fast Hands, Ghost, Flash Grenade, Molotov Cocktail, Frag Grenade, Stim, Smoke Wall, Riot Shield, Silenced Pistol, Revolver, Akimbo Pistols, and Power Pistol. Players can also buy shotguns, light machine guns, marksman rifles, silenced and agile SMGs, semi-auto rifles, high-damage rifles, burst rifles, silenced rifles, sniper rifles, and a UAV team purchase.
Death will remove a player’s current loadout, although earned money will carry between rounds. Collateral will disable respawns, killstreaks, automatic health regeneration, and custom loadouts, leaving teams to make careful purchases with limited tools.
