Brütal Legend Is Free for 666 Minutes as a Tim Curry Tribute

Double Fine's 666-minute itch.io giveaway has ended, though players who claimed the game can download it later.

Brütal Legend was free on itch.io for exactly 666 minutes on August 27 following the death of actor and voice performer Tim Curry at age 80. The promotion has now ended, but players who claimed the heavy-metal hack-and-slash real-time strategy game during the window can download it later.

Double Fine announced the free period through its official Bluesky account. The Brütal Legend itch.io page carries the brief memorial message, “Rest in peace, dark prince.”

To honor Tim Curry's memory, we are making Brütal Legend FREE on Itch.io, for 666 minutes:itch.io/s/199277/the…

Curry voiced Doviculus, Emperor of the Tainted Coil and the game’s villain. His other video game roles included Gabriel Knight, Premier Anatoly Cherdenko in Red Alert 3, Arl Howe in Dragon Age: Origins, Jimmy Neutron, and characters in The Wild Thornberrys. He was also widely known for his live-action performances in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and It, adding another memorable performance to a career spanning film, television, and games.

The character of Doviculus was originally planned for heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio. Tim Schafer later explained in an interview with USA Today that Curry’s voice was a perfect match for the role.

This is not the first time Double Fine has used the same 666-minute format. Last year, the studio offered Brütal Legend free in honor of Ozzy Osbourne, who appears in the game as the Guardian of Metal shopkeeper.
