Bloober Team has revealed Onyx: The Dark Grip as a Switch 2 exclusive during Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 Direct. Planned for 2027, the psychological horror game makes the player an in-world force called the Entity, turning protection and interference into part of the protagonist’s nightmare. A specific launch date has not been announced.

Onyx: The Dark Grip splits its perspective between the character inside the world and the person controlling it. Players directly control a vessel, then manipulate the surrounding reality from outside it as the Entity. Protecting the protagonist and interfering with his life are both possible, but he cannot easily accept that a higher consciousness is guiding his existence.
The Entity changes Onyx’s horror setup
Outside the vessel, the Entity can reach into the protagonist’s world while remaining separate from it. His growing awareness of that control is gradually driving him mad, creating a conflict between the protection he needs and the influence he fears.
Bloober’s earlier psychological horror work, including Layers of Fear and the Silent Hill 2 Remake, provides a clear point of comparison. Onyx: The Dark Grip takes a different route by making the relationship between the player and the character part of the threat instead of simply placing players inside another haunted setting.
Handheld mode is the only way to play Onyx: The Dark Grip. That format fits a game built around the connection between the person holding the system and the world inside its screen.
Bloober Team has shown only the central premise so far, while the 2027 release window provides the current timing. For now, the strongest hook is the Entity, with the player not only guiding the protagonist but also becoming the force he fears.
