Battlefield REDSEC launched today as the free-to-play battle royale offshoot of Battlefield 6, and the immediate reaction on Steam is, bluntly, cold. The Steam page lists Mostly Negative verdict, with threads of complaints repeating across the board. I mean, why exactly? If you ask me, the game is more than decent and fun to play, and I don’t know why people are hating on it in the first place.
Players praise the scale and spectacle familiar to Battlefield fans, but many reviews highlight frustration with how REDSEC ties into the main Battlefield 6 progression. A common gripe is that challenges and unlocks crossover between the battle royale and standard multiplayer, which some users see as forced progression that pulls them into modes they did not sign up for. Other frequent complaints include the absence of a Solo playlist option and issues with match composition. One reviewer wrote that there is “no solo queue and no disable autofill option, so you can’t even play solo against duos.” Another pointed to the UI, calling it “terrible” and too similar to other games’ store setups.
The map Fort Lyndor gets mixed praise; players like the size and points of interest, and a few reviewers even noted they wish the main game had similarly large maps. Still, the negatives have shaped the early Steam sentiment. If you want context beyond impressions, we previously covered REDSEC as BF6’s free-to-play battle royale and the launch plan. There are deeper looks at specific features, like Gauntlet mode, explained, and the server tick-rate discussion in our piece on the 30Hz servers.
Steam scores can change quickly in the hours and days after launch; some complaints may be about early live issues, matchmaking edge cases, or design decisions players notice only after a few sessions. Others are clearly about long-term design choices that will test patience if left unaddressed. Either way, the launch has not been a smooth celebration.
