Recent leaks suggest that Intel is preparing to announce its 14th-generation CPUs, with the Intel Core i9-14900K expected to lead the lineup. A leaked slide indicates that this new flagship processor is only 2% faster than AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X3D. The data raises questions about Intel’s competitive edge, especially in the gaming sector.
The Intel Core i9-14900K is set to feature 24 cores, split between 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores, and will support up to 32 threads. On the other hand, the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D is also a high-performance processor, but the leak did not mention specific details about its cores and threads.
The leaked slide revealed some surprising performance metrics in gaming. While Intel’s new CPU has an edge in certain games like Metro Exodus and Total War: Warhammer, it falls behind the AMD processor in popular titles like DOTA 2, Fortnite, and Cyberpunk 2077. In DOTA 2, the AMD CPU was 23% faster; in Fortnite and Cyberpunk 2077, it was faster by 18% and 11%, respectively.
This data suggests that Intel’s new processor might not be the top choice for gamers, particularly those who play these titles. Surprisingly, Intel included games where their new flagship underperforms, perhaps in a bid for transparency.
The slide also highlights the second CCD (Core Complex Die) in the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, which could have affected its performance. Some analyses suggest that disabling this feature can lead to improved performance. If this is true, then the performance gap between the Intel Core i9-14900K and the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D could be even less than the 2% indicated, making the AMD processor potentially faster in some cases.
