Final Fantasy Resonance Producer Says Square Enix Wanted a Basic Port

Keisuke Nakashima's 2020 pitch grew from a desire to bring the story of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius to a wider audience.

Final Fantasy Resonance grew out of a disagreement over how much Square Enix should rework Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Producer Keisuke Nakashima says executives wanted a quicker, less expensive port of the mobile game, while he argued for the broader adaptation that became the released RPG.

Brave Exvius was a mobile gacha game that shut down in 2024. Resonance draws on its foundation and adapts parts of its story as an HD-2D, turn-based RPG, without the original game’s gacha mechanics or microtransactions.

Nakashima’s pitch for a fuller console adaptation dates back to 2020. In a Bloomberg interview, he said he resisted the simpler port because he wanted to create “an original version for consoles that was a full-blown gameplay experience.”

His approach was informed in part by feedback during a Brave Exvius press tour. Nakashima recalled meeting people who were interested in the mobile game but did not want to play because of its gacha elements. A console version offered a way to bring the story to a wider audience, he said.
