Grand Theft Auto VI Will Let Players Roam Leonida Early Without Story Missions
An unscripted 90-minute playthrough also showed longer nights, a four-point relationship scale, and a fully functioning bus and train network.

Leonida will open up relatively early in Grand Theft Auto VI, letting players head north without following story missions. A 90-minute unscripted playthrough at Rockstar North’s Edinburgh headquarters put co-studio head Rob Nelson at the controls and showed how much the world can offer beyond the main story.

Even Aaron Garbut said he continues to find locations he had not seen after years working on increasingly dense versions of the game. Rockstar’s early research for a return to Vice City began with a 2015 trip to Miami by Nelson and a small team, who identified places and parts of Florida culture for larger research teams to investigate.
Leonida’s days and nights will have more room to breathe than in the previous game. Sunsets linger, nights stretch longer, and clouds move independently in response to wind, humidity, fog, time of day, and season.
Some environmental reactions now work beyond individually written scenes. Rockstar expanded a reaction to one unpleasant location into a broader disgust system. When Jason enters a house fouled by a dog, he grimaces and recoils even though no bespoke scene was written for that moment.
A police encounter showed how a small opening can turn into an opportunity. Two officers left their vehicles unattended while making an arrest, allowing Jason to take a shotgun from a trunk and walk away. A K9 unit also tackled him during the playthrough, and Nelson was urged not to shoot the dog.
Weapon access comes with limits. Players can carry two concealed handguns and smaller items, but larger weapons must come from a vehicle trunk or Ammu-Nation lockers. Scooter Brothers can deliver a car to Jason and Lucia, then ride away on a scooter. Cars can travel a long distance before running low on fuel, and refueling is brief but still requires some attention.
Leonida’s buses and trains will be usable ways to travel around the state. In the Edge feature, Rockstar head of development Phil Hooker described checking that buses arrive as expected and taking them during play. He has memorized the routes.
Earlier GTA buses could be hijacked but not used as passenger transport, while the train in Grand Theft Auto V ran as a continuous shuttle. Riding a bus or train in GTA VI can let players make a trip without worrying about their own vehicle’s fuel or damage. A September feature had also described the RydeMe ride-share service as a fast-travel option in Leonida, giving players another way to cover the map.
Jason and Lucia’s relationship will have a four-point closeness scale. Rockstar has said player choices can affect their relationship, and Nelson said the pair begin by wanting to give it another try. Players can define their closeness and intimacy, though Nelson would not confirm whether marriage is possible. The story may also move beyond a familiar rags-to-riches arc, with the couple wanting something other than power.
