GTA 6’s Map Will Have Far More Interiors, Rockstar Says
Aaron Garbut says Leonida approaches the combined scale of Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, while feedback about GTA V's sparse northern areas informed its outer regions.

Grand Theft Auto VI‘s map will be roughly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V‘s, while Leonida’s total landmass will come close to the combined playable areas of Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. In an Edge interview, Rockstar co-studio head Aaron Garbut said the game has “an order of magnitude more interiors” than Rockstar’s previous games.
Garbut described development teams giving attention to back alleys and seemingly ordinary locations across Leonida. He said every back alley is “as densely detailed and interesting as the others,” and that people had thought about even random locations. Even after years of work, he continues to find places in the game he has not explored himself.
One example came during a play session, when Garbut entered a home he had never seen before. A photograph of a dog was in one room, while the next was trashed, with dog feces smeared around. Jason grimaces and recoils at the mess, which suggests what the dog got up to while left alone. Photographs and belongings in living rooms and on kitchen counters add other clues to the lives of the people who live in these spaces.
Feedback about GTA V‘s sparsely populated northern stretches, including the Senora Desert, also informed Rockstar’s approach to Leonida’s outer regions.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date.
