Dantics Says the Next Mass Effect Is Set 600+ Years After the Reaper War

Dantics says he saw the game during development and gave feedback, though his claimed council role has not been independently confirmed.

The next Mass Effect was planned to take place more than 600 years after the Reaper War, with a customizable N7 operative in a galaxy divided among three major powers. Dantics says he served on BioWare’s Mass Effect Council, saw the project during development, and offered feedback. He shared his account on Oct. 23, two days after BioWare announced it was closing and ending early development on the game.

Dantics’ timeline differs from a leaked pre-production cinematic that suggested a setting thousands of years after Mass Effect 3. The cinematic’s early footage does not establish the finished story, and BioWare has not confirmed the game’s final setting.

Dantics says he served on BioWare’s Mass Effect Council and saw the game during development, but his claimed membership has not been independently confirmed. PC Gamer noted that it could not independently confirm his membership. BioWare has referenced community councils in a Dragon Age development update, though that does not establish Dantics’ role.

In Dantics’ account, humanity, the Krogan, the Batarians, and smaller factions would form one bloc. The Asari, Salarians, and Turians would make up an alliance of Council races, while the Geth would stand as a third galactic power. A cold-war stalemate with a shadowy adversary would replace another Reaper-style invasion. The setting would also feature Geth-built megastructures and connections between the Milky Way and Andromeda.

Separately, IGN cited an anonymous development source who said every major alien race appeared in an in-production build. That account concerns the project’s roster, distinct from Dantics’ description of its political blocs.

The customizable N7 operative would have experimental technology implanted in them, with the ability to see through walls, identify systems, manipulate their surroundings, and trigger hazards remotely. Dantics compared the character to a mix of John Wick and James Bond. He described linear, handcrafted missions rather than large open-world environments, with room to approach objectives in different ways, much like Hitman. Gadgets, hacking, and stealth options would sit alongside close-range melee executions.

Other planned elements included squadmates who could clash and romances that would not be toned down. Liara would return as a powerful Asari Matriarch.

In a separate video, Dantics said the game was designed to accommodate all three Mass Effect endings rather than choose one as canon. He said the Reapers would be outdated technology 600 years later, while commonplace cybernetics would echo the Synthesis ending. A Shepard who survived Destroy would not live to see that future, but their legacy would endure.

BioWare has not confirmed these plans. They describe an unfinished project, not a final game design.

Would accommodating all three endings have made this far-future story feel more connected to Shepard’s trilogy? For more context on BioWare’s closure and the unfinished Mass Effect project, stay connected through X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
