Factorio 2.1 is live, bringing quality-of-life changes and smaller features Wube had wanted to include in 2.0. After 14 years of development, it is the game’s final major update, though smaller bug-fix patches may still follow.
Rockets can now carry multiple item types in one launch. In Space Age, platforms can transfer goods between one another in orbit and automatically import items from available locations. A constructable unloading bay attaches to landing pads, letting inserters move arriving cargo onto belts or into trains. Elevated rails can cross cargo bays, too, while land mines can serve as tripwires or enemy detectors.
Base defense also changes. Biter expansion groups now scale with evolution, nests appear in more natural locations, and the creatures can expand their territory even if players have not explored the map early. Wube’s Friday Facts post says the goal is to make clearing nests a more meaningful challenge than dealing with lots of tiny nests.
Elsewhere, 2.1 restores fluid-mixing prevention and adjusts Space Age’s Quality system. Assembling machines, oil refineries, rocket silos, and heat exchangers get updated graphics, while a new rendering system makes it easier to connect pumps to rail fluid wagons. Wube describes the release as a collection of polish and smaller features, rather than new planets, enemies, or research trees.
Factorio has more than 234,000 positive Steam reviews and a 98% Overwhelmingly Positive rating. Wube has also kept the game off sale, a policy the developers explained in a 2016 forum post.
