Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s Kill Block Will Rebuild Maps From 500+ Pieces

Infinity Ward says the mode can support Gunfight and several other playlists, while Ground War's Combat Outpost can reward teams with a UAV, care package and tank.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will make map familiarity a moving target in Kill Block, where more than 500 slabs can combine into layouts that change from match to match. The mode was among the multiplayer details discussed during an October 22 visit to Infinity Ward on the Official Xbox Podcast. The game launches October 23.

Creative director Jeff Smith came up with the idea of a living map built from separate sections. Some pieces draw on classic Modern Warfare maps, including Crash and Highrise. Players can learn the layout of individual slabs even as they encounter new combinations, routes and sightlines.

Kill Block is designed for Gunfight, where the map changes alongside the loadouts, and also supports modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Search and Destroy, and Kill Confirmed. The changing layout puts map knowledge to a different test: learning a useful section can pay off again, even when it connects to a new set of pieces.

Ground War brings another multiplayer twist to Hajin. In Combat Outpost, teams can remain on captured points longer to earn team-wide rewards. The sequence starts with a UAV, advances to a care package and ends with a tank drop.

The campaign will follow two perspectives on the Korean peninsula, pairing South Korean soldier Private Park and his squad with Price and Task Force 141. Infinity Ward co-studio head Jack O’Hara said the team wanted a fresh setting and researched Korea and its military, with Korean colleagues also helping check details such as signs and snacks. Price begins on the run after killing a general at the Pentagon in Modern Warfare III, while most of Task Force 141 has been disbanded. The two storylines affect each other even when the groups are not fighting side by side.

DMZ connects to Multiplayer through shared progression. Joe Cecot said DMZ XP also advances a player’s Core Multiplayer rank, while weapons keep the same level in both modes, allowing players to work on weapon levels and camos across either one. In DMZ, players can spend in-game cash to buy and customize a weapon or extract one and modify it later. The mode’s wider loop also includes four AI tiers, dynamic weather and a Forward Operating Base.

The podcast also featured an Xbox Blueprint for the M4, inspired by translucent Xbox hardware and presented as a nod to the brand’s 25th anniversary. Jacky Reynolds said the team has content planned around Halloween, before Season 1, and through the rest of the year.

Would learning individual Kill Block slabs be enough to keep routes readable when the map rearranges? For more on the mode’s map pieces and DMZ’s shared weapon progression, stay connected on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.

The game also includes multiplayer with 6v6 core maps, large-scale vehicle combat maps, and a dynamic map system called Kill Block that reshapes layouts between rounds. A DMZ extraction mode is also featured. The game is released exclusively on current-generation platforms and PC.
