Red Dead Redemption 2’s enRAGE Mod Gives NPCs Long Memories

Eight rival outfits can wage unscripted wars, while NPCs carry their histories, injuries, and grudges into later encounters.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, robbing, beating, or insulting someone can come back to haunt the player long after an encounter ends. Modder nicklovin99’s enRAGE adds a Nemesis-style system in which NPCs have names, temperaments, histories, and grudges that develop in response to the player’s actions.

Characters can have quirks, a trade, faith, family, and a life story that began years before they met the player. Temperaments such as Hothead, Proud, Cold, Coward, Greedy, Loyal, or Drifter can shape whether an NPC fights, backs down, talks, or forgives. People may return in the same towns with the same face and a reason to remember what happened.

A survivor may come back with scars or a limp, while the friends or relatives of someone killed can seek revenge. Wearing a mask can keep a victim from recognizing the player and carrying a grudge. Captured enemies can also be questioned about their leaders, plans, or hidden supplies, though they may lie and lead the player into a trap.

Gang conflicts give the system a wider reach. Eight outfits, including the O’Driscoll Boys, Lemoyne Raiders, U.S. Army, Bronte Family, and Murfree Brood, have their own leaders, officers, members, money, and territory. Wars can break out over land, losses, or old rivalries, with goals, front lines, roadblocks, and battles players may hear in the distance. They can grow, fade, or end in peace, even when the player stays out of the conflict.

Players can tip the balance by killing officers, raiding treasuries, or burning supplies. A side’s war can collapse, leaving rivals room to claim territory.

Encounters can unfold on the road or in town. Riders, bounty hunters, patrols, and rival gangs may appear while traveling, while feuding men can turn up at bars or on the street. A fight may draw in their friends and gangmates. Officers also keep routines, and their relatives may hold funerals after they die.

The world keeps its own history between encounters. People can marry, fall ill, go to jail, rob stagecoaches, or die in fights, with events recorded in a world log and local newspapers. Each town tracks its own opinion of the player. Telegrams can be used to threaten a foe, make peace, pay off a nemesis, or write to pen pals. The mod also records each shot, tracing the bullet’s path and the bones and organs it hits, with different ammunition types producing different effects.

enRAGE is in early access for PC Story Mode only. Its creator warns that bugs remain and asks players to report them. The Nexus Mods page for enRAGE hosts the download. The mod requires ScriptHookRDR2 by Alexander Blade and ScriptHookRDR2DotNet V2.
