Nearly 30 employees petitioned to have the company declared bankrupt after going at least two months without pay, according to Breakit. Sweden’s state wage guarantee will cover their unpaid salaries.

Founded in 2020 by Christofer Sundberg, Liquid Swords was his first studio after he co-founded Avalanche Studios and co-directed the first Just Cause. The studio’s debut, Samson, began as a much larger action RPG before publisher difficulties and funding problems reshaped it around run-based play. One publisher rejected the project five times. Funding trouble led to layoffs affecting half the team in 2025, and Sundberg said in February that the studio had to begin a formal process of parting ways with staff.

Samson launched on Steam and the Epic Games Store in April 2026. Its PS5 version arrived on Sept. 21, three weeks before the bankruptcy order. The game received a mixed response, with criticism focused largely on bugs. Sundberg later acknowledged that the game shipped with flaws and said the studio would keep improving it, but did not explain what caused the problems.

Liquid Swords released a patch for Samson on Oct. 8, four days before the bankruptcy order.
