The shoot follows Blizzard’s Diablo 5 announcement at BlizzCon 2026, which gave the sequel a planned Spring 2029 release window. Blizzard’s announcement included a trailer but no gameplay, so the start of cinematic production does not show how far the playable game has progressed. Carter did not identify the scenes being filmed, and footage can still be revised or cut before release. Development remains early, so the release window could change.
Diablo 5’s story continues roughly a century after Diablo 4, in a Sanctuary already conquered by Diablo. The sequel will leave Diablo 4’s continuous open world behind for fully procedurally generated overworld maps and dungeons, with an approach described as similar in philosophy to Diablo 2.
Confirmed classes include returning Demon Hunter and Monk, alongside the new Plague Knight, whose abilities focus on spreading and consuming disease.
