Tim Sweeney Expects Most Epic Games Work to Reach 3x January 2026 Efficiency
He puts current AI gains at 20% in some Unreal Engine work and 5x in web development, and sees faster playtesting as a major design payoff.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney expects nearly all of the company’s work to reach at least 3x its January 2026 efficiency by this time next year, putting a specific measure on Epic’s expanding AI effort.
Current results vary sharply, Sweeney said. He put AI’s effect at 20% in some of Unreal Engine’s most technical development work and 5x in web development.
He also expects AI to shorten the time between an idea and a playtest, giving teams a chance to test game systems earlier. Sweeney argued that many recent AAA failures stemmed from systems going too far into development without playtesting.
One project already using the approach is Epic’s unannounced Star Wars and Marvel shooter, which was delayed indefinitely from a planned March 2027 release. Developers were instructed to use AI workflows for art and avoid handwritten code.
On X, Sweeney said Epic wants its teams to build more and better products, rather than maintain the same output with fewer people, and to extend AI’s benefits to Unreal users.
We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration.
The aim isn't to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal.

Addressing resistance to generative AI, Sweeney said Epic has to build for current and coming technology. He described himself as optimistic about AI’s potential for creators.
