Epic Delays Unannounced Star Wars and Marvel Shooter Amid AI Push
The Marvel and Star Wars extraction shooter has no new target after a planned March launch, while its reported AI-first rules call for AI-generated art and no handwritten code.

Epic Games has delayed an unannounced Disney collaboration, an extraction shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters. The game had been planned for March, but its team has no new target. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that Epic is also directing the project toward an AI-first production workflow.

An internal message from one of the game’s directors told staff to use Anthropic’s Claude, create art through “full AI workflows,” and use “no more hand-written code.” Developers would guide the AI output, but the instructions do not establish that every part of the finished game will be generated by AI.
Development was already moving more slowly than expected, partly because Epic underestimated how many staff the project would require. Some developers were reportedly stunned by the instructions during an internal video call the previous week. Others joked about asking Claude to fix mistakes in its own AI-generated work.
An Epic spokesperson said the company was embracing AI-accelerated development while keeping its developers in charge of the creative work. The spokesperson described Epic developers as “the visionaries and creative drivers for everything we do.”
Epic’s June 2026 Unreal Engine 6 announcement described integrations with AI models such as Claude and Gemini to reduce tedious work in development. The reported shooter plan applies AI workflows to both art and coding.
CEO Tim Sweeney has described a wider company pivot, saying Epic is moving developers around to accelerate AI work. He said the goal is to help teams build more and better products, rather than produce the same amount with fewer people, and to bring the benefits to teams using Unreal.
We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration.
The aim isn't to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal.

Epic’s AI push follows layoffs of more than 1,000 staff earlier in 2026 amid declining Fortnite performance. Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic in 2024, establishing a broader gaming and entertainment partnership that includes the shooter.
