Squadron 42 now has a Steam page where players can wishlist the single-player campaign ahead of its Q2 2027 target. The listing includes PC system requirements and calls for 150GB of storage. Its specifications do not mention ray-tracing-capable GPUs or DirectX 12.
The Star Citizen counterpart casts players as a United Empire of Earth Navy recruit aboard a capital ship. Set in 2945, the story finds the empire close to collapse, threatened by human outlaws and hostile alien forces. Players progress through the Navy’s ranks, build relationships with the crew, and face choices that affect the story.
The campaign’s action ranges from space combat and first-person shooting to stealth, platforming, and puzzles. It also includes ship customization, off-duty activities, hacking, exploration, and interactive cinematic sequences. Its story moves between battles and time with the crew, giving the single-player campaign a different scope from Star Citizen’s persistent universe.
Cloud Imperium Games’ official wishlist trailer gives a look at that mix of action and story.
Cloud Imperium’s cast includes Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Jonathan Bailey, Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill, Ben Mendelsohn, Jane Perry, Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham, Damson Idris, and Rhona Mitra. Alix Wilton Regan is also part of the cast and can voice the player character, alongside Ian Duncan. The performances use full performance capture, and character scenes are designed to appear during gameplay as well as in cutscenes.
Cloud Imperium had previously expressed uncertainty about a 2026 release, as reflected in earlier concerns over Squadron 42’s timing. CEO Chris Roberts later moved the target from late 2026 to Q2 2027 in a letter to backers, citing the need to avoid Grand Theft Auto VI’s launch window and give the game room to draw attention.
Does the campaign’s mix of ship combat, stealth, and time with the crew make the Q2 2027 wait more appealing to you?
