Gears of War: E-Day Tips for Staying Alive When Cover Fails
Marcus and Dom have three days and nights to survive in Kalona, where weapon caches, optional missions, and collectible chimes reward attention between battles.

Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6, 2026, taking Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, and their squad into the opening days of the Locust invasion in Kalona. The game is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass, and Steam. Xbox Play Anywhere also lets players play on console and PC at no additional cost.
Xbox’s launch-day guide points to a flexible approach to combat: use cover to control the fight, but do not mistake it for a safe place to stay forever.
Know when to stay in cover and when to move
Cover helps protect against Drones and other enemies, so move between positions and pick off targets rather than crossing open ground without a reason. A Brumak carrying a chain weapon is a different problem. Keep moving and spread out instead of relying on cover to protect the squad from its attacks.
Weapons fill different jobs. The Chainsaw Lancer handles close-to-mid-range fights and has an upgradeable magazine, while the Gnasher is built for devastating damage up close. Use the Longshot to hit enemies from a distance and weaken tougher targets, such as Boomers, before they close in. Weapon caches around Kalona let you change your loadout, so adjust to the next fight rather than sticking with one setup.
Use melee and blind fire to control close fights
The campaign introduces melee with a metal pipe and the Snub pistol before the Lancer enters the picture. Learn the timing and range of those attacks, including how to respond to threats behind you. Later, the Chainsaw Lancer adds another close-range option.
Blind fire lets you shoot from behind cover without exposing yourself to aim. Use it to keep pressure on an approaching enemy when rushing in for a melee attack is too risky, or when you need a moment to recover.
Search Kalona for help and story details
Kalona’s campaign is mostly linear, but its larger open areas have alternate paths and optional missions. Helping other COG squads or civilians adds context to the city’s wider crisis and can earn weapon mods.
Listen for a sharp chime when entering a new area. It signals a nearby collectible, which can be anything from COG armor or tags to a can of soup. Each one has a lore entry, and some are written by squad members, adding details about their stories and the world around them.
Which of these survival habits do you expect to rely on most in Kalona? As the campaign returns to the opening hours of Emergence Day, stay connected through X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
