Sega’s Official Sonic Discord Faces Early Moderation Trouble
Sega says aggressive auto-moderation may have flagged harmless posts and mistakenly banned members, while images were disabled by default and most chat channels were locked.
Sega’s official Sonic the Hedgehog Discord opened on October 5, 2026, inviting fans to chat and find people to race with in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. More than 50,000 people joined within hours, and members soon reported spam and posts containing sexual, racist, and other discriminatory content.

Moderators responded by locking eight of the server’s nine chat channels to most users and enabling Slowmode to limit rapid-fire posts. The only channel left open to most members was for clips from Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

Posting access varied. Server boosters could post in every channel, while some members who had earned enough XP before the restrictions appeared to keep their access. A social post described a user being banned after impersonating Yuji Naka.
Some users also said the server briefly stopped accepting messages altogether.
Images were disabled by default as new members joined. The server FAQ said a fan-art channel was planned for later, with image permissions expected to open over time. Text chat still produced crude character jokes, including one message that read “Sonic pregnant”.

Sega’s server FAQ attributed many deleted messages and bans to aggressive auto-moderation. It acknowledged that the filter was removing all-caps posts and flagging some harmless words and phrases. Sega said it would review possible mistaken bans as activity eased and planned to loosen the filter.
