Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ Is Infinity Ward’s Bid to Bring Extraction Shooters to the Mainstream
A 15-minute From The Ward episode details DMZ's broad scope, dynamic weather, FOB hub, and action-focused design, including four AI tiers and high-profile targets.

Infinity Ward sees Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s DMZ as a franchise-scale bet on bringing extraction shooters to a mainstream audience. The October 5, 15-minute From The Ward episode is now available, and Multiplayer Creative Director Joe Cecot describes DMZ as an “Action Extraction Shooter,” a label for a design built around more frequent combat than runs where looting is interrupted only occasionally.
After the Hajin worldbuilding trailer, gameplay breakdowns were scheduled for October 6 through 8, followed by final intel on October 9. The October 5 development episode was part of that rollout.
Infinity Ward co-studio head Jack O’Hara said the team began by revisiting existing Call of Duty mechanics and considering what new experiences they could support. The earlier DMZ beta provided a foundation for the upcoming mode.
Infinity Ward described DMZ as near the upper end of what the studio has attempted in scope. Its examples include AI enemy and player counts, the map’s size and depth, dynamic weather, and the FOB social hub. The studio compares the project’s scale to Call of Duty: Warzone, which it viewed as a similarly large bet when it launched in 2020.
The action-focused pitch has specific systems behind it. DMZ’s AI has four tiers, including high-profile enemies such as Commanders and Lieutenants, whose defeat can reward valuable loot. Rival Operators, gear, and loot spread across the map add further pressure. Looting remains central to the extraction loop, but the design is intended to make raids busier than a hunt for supplies punctuated by occasional fights.
