Marathon’s Nightfall Refresh Is Scheduled for October 6 Before Symbiosis on December 8
The October update will reset progression and the economy, while December adds permanent PvE, a refreshed Perimeter, and a social space with a firing range.

Bungie is splitting Marathon’s next wave of content across two future updates. The material originally planned for the September 22 release will now arrive with Symbiosis on December 8, while a smaller Nightfall Refresh is scheduled for October 6, as outlined in Bungie’s development update.
October will give every player a fresh starting point through a progression and in-game economy reset. Season 2: Nightfall launched with progression and reward issues that pushed some players toward the endgame faster than others. Bungie said that made Extraction harder to engage with and prevented the reset from working as intended.
The Nightfall Refresh will also add a new Rewards Pass, quality-of-life improvements, and live tuning and balance changes. Vault Breaker will return for a limited time as well, giving Bungie another chance to study how its PvE structure fits into progression after the reset. The mode previously received its own extended run in an earlier Vault Breaker update.
Bungie also plans to use the eight weeks between the October and December updates for gameplay experiments and development updates. The studio is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule so it has more time to build, test, and improve features before launch.
December Symbiosis adds permanent PvE
Symbiosis will introduce Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, giving players a way to engage with the world outside the usual PvPvE extraction format. The update will also refresh the Perimeter zone and add a new social space with a firing range.
December’s release will include a new Runner shell, an experimental PvP Team Deathmatch mode, and the first set of improvements to Marathon’s new-player onboarding. Bungie described Symbiosis as the first major step in the game’s next chapter, with further changes planned through March and beyond as player feedback informs development.
Bungie acknowledged that players have been asking for more depth, variety, stronger progression, and better reasons to keep returning over the long term. The October reset will address the current foundation first, while Symbiosis will add more ways to play in December.
