Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is now available in English for the first time, ending a 33-year wait for one of Japan’s most influential Dragon Quest spin-offs. The $25 release arrived on September 9, 2026, for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via the Steam store page.
Chunsoft’s Super Famicom roguelike stars Torneko, the merchant from Dragon Quest IV, as he explores dangerous dungeons one turn at a time. Players collect treasure, build experience, and push toward deeper floors, but death sends the run back to the beginning.
Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon helped define the genre
Rogue provided the foundation for that structure, while Chunsoft’s use of a familiar Dragon Quest character helped make the format a major success in Japan. The original game never received an English release, but the Mystery Dungeon concept continued through Chunsoft’s Shiren the Wanderer series and licensed games such as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and Chocobo Mystery Dungeon.
Classic HD keeps the old-school dungeon design while giving the presentation a light visual upgrade in the style of Square Enix’s HD-2D projects. The Steam edition also includes free streamer-focused DLC, allowing viewers to influence mysterious events during a run. Most players can ignore that feature, but it gives streamers a way to add unpredictable interruptions to an already unforgiving adventure.
Players interested in Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon can now find the long-untranslated spin-off directly on PC and consoles, with its full release title preserved in the Steam listing.
