No Man’s Sky’s COSMOS Update Will Test Tech Hello Games Hopes to Bring to Light No Fire

The September 9 update will add custom space stations, resource-rich space hulks, and alliances that can involve thousands of players.

Light No Fire has surfaced again, this time through the upcoming No Man’s Sky COSMOS update. Scheduled for September 9, the update will give Hello Games a chance to test systems it hopes players will eventually experience in its fantasy survival game.

COSMOS will introduce custom space stations and resource-rich “space hulks” to No Man’s Sky. It will also add player alliances built around large communities and shared stations, with the update overview describing groups that can reach thousands of players.

Sean Murray explained that the technology behind those systems is being tested in No Man’s Sky before Hello Games considers bringing parts of it to Light No Fire. He also described alliances involving tens of thousands of players, with communities working together and claiming space stations across the stars.

The connection does not confirm that Light No Fire will copy COSMOS feature for feature. Its world is built around one Earth-sized planet instead of No Man’s Sky‘s vast collection of planets, so the way alliances, shared locations, and points of interest work could look very different.

Newer footage was not part of the appearance. The update overview instead revisited older Light No Fire scenes, including humanoid rabbit warriors gathering together, a dragon mount flying over the landscape, and an ogre reacting with visible confusion. The brief return still puts the project back in view after months of quiet.

Volumetric lighting technology also received a mention during the overview, giving players another possible link between the two games. Hello Games had previously teased a future COSMOS update in its August 10 anniversary coverage, but the new material adds the first concrete details about the systems it may share with Light No Fire.
