GTA 6 NPCs Can Try to Disarm Players and Drop Hats and Glasses
A preview session also showed one heavier officer tiring during a chase, different police-car crash outcomes, and robberies that can reveal extra cash or jewelry.

GTA 6 will give its NPCs more ways to react when players carry weapons, start fights, or cause trouble in public. Some characters may try to disarm the player, while others will run away or show fear, and dropped accessories can become wearable items during a getaway.
The details came from MikeShowSha’s conversation with Rob Nelson at a preview event, with additional context from a translated recap by El_Pintor64. The findings add more detail to the NPC reactions already seen in the extended look at GTA 6, which included an NPC approaching Lucia during a robbery.
NPCs can resist, flee, or change their appearance
Visible weapons will not produce one identical response from every person in the area. Some NPCs can approach the player and attempt to disarm them, while others may retreat or react with fear. That should make armed confrontations feel less predictable than a simple switch from civilian behavior to combat.
Fights can also leave useful items behind. During the preview, two NPCs dropped a hat and glasses after a confrontation. Jason could pick up both accessories and wear them, giving players another possible way to alter his appearance while escaping the police.
Clothing will also reflect where NPCs spend time. People near gyms may wear sportswear, while residents in Jason’s neighborhood dress more casually. These location-based details should help different parts of Leonida develop their own visual character.
Police chases can end differently
Police officers will not all have the same physical capabilities. One heavier officer chased Jason on foot during the preview, then stopped and appeared exhausted and out of breath after Jason created enough distance.
Police vehicle crashes are not limited to one fixed animation, either. When Rob Nelson shot at police cars during the session, the vehicles reacted differently from one attempt to the next. Nelson also recreated a crash similar to one shown in the extended look, indicating that the spectacular collisions can happen during play rather than existing only as a staged scene.
Robberies can reveal more than the first score
A robbery at a regular shop can open another decision after the cashier gives up the location of a safe in the back room. Players can leave with the money already taken or risk going deeper for a larger payout.
Another encounter began as a random crime event. Two masked women became trapped while trying to rob a jewelry store and asked Jason and Lucia for help. Players could assist them and then steal the jewelry themselves. Rockstar told MikeShowSha that its own testers had not encountered that situation for months, suggesting that some open-world events may be difficult to find even during repeated play sessions.
With different NPC responses, location-specific outfits, physical differences among police officers, and crime events that can take unexpected turns, GTA 6’s crowds appear designed to do more than fill empty sidewalks. The preview points to a city where nearby characters can change how a robbery or police escape develops.
