World of Warcraft’s Venomous Abyss Week 3 Logs Compare Spec Popularity With Raid Performance
The breakdown separates the specializations players used most often from those that delivered the strongest results during the raid's third week.
World of Warcraft‘s The Venomous Abyss has reached a useful checkpoint for class watchers. Week 3 raid logs show Marksmanship Hunter leading Heroic damage performance while Arcane Mage remains the most-played specialization, keeping popularity and results separate instead of treating a common pick as the automatic winner.
That split gives raiders a clearer way to read current class trends. A high-play-rate option may be common because it fits group roles or is widely understood, while a top-performing option can reflect encounter demands, gear, and player execution. One week’s results can inform a choice, but they do not create a permanent tier list.
Timing also gives the snapshot useful context. Blizzard opened the eight-boss raid in stages, with Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Raid Finder Wing 1 arriving during the week of August 18. Raid Finder Wing 2 followed during the week of August 25, Wing 3 arrived during the week of September 1, and the final wing was scheduled for the week of September 8, as outlined in the Venomous Abyss opening schedule.
Arcane leads participation while Marksmanship leads Heroic damage
The Warcraft Logs rankings use normalized scores rather than raw DPS. That reduces the influence of encounters where area damage or another fight-specific feature can give certain specializations an outsized advantage. The overall data also includes Nymrissa Wavecaller from the Tidebound Grotto Lair, so that boss contributes directly to the wider raid comparison.
Heroic participation grew by roughly 30 percent across the specialization population compared with the previous week. Arcane sits at the front of that larger field, with more than 100,000 additional players separating it from the next specialization.
Arms Warrior remains near the top for popularity, although Retribution Paladin has cut into its lead. Demonology Warlock made the largest move among the popular picks, climbing four positions into fourth after strong raid-log results drew more players to the specialization. Beast Mastery is still the most-played Hunter even though Marksmanship is producing better damage numbers.
Unholy Death Knight slipped only one position despite sitting near the bottom of the damage rankings. Fire Mage, Survival Hunter, and Affliction Warlock remain in the smallest population group, each sitting between roughly 3,500 and 9,000 players.
Marksmanship takes the overall damage lead
Marksmanship’s rise is clearest in the 95th-percentile Heroic results. The Hunter moved ahead of Arcane and opened a small lead of its own, with Demonology and Arms following behind. Balance Druid also made a sharp climb, jumping 11 positions into fifth.
Several other specializations remain packed near the top. Multiple Rogue specializations are still present in the upper section, although Outlaw fell farther away from the top 10. Devastation Evoker dropped three places but held onto eighth, while Destruction Warlock narrowly missed the top 10.
The all-percentiles chart tells a similar story. Marksmanship and Demonology each rose one position, while Balance reached seventh after gaining eight places. Enhancement Shaman fell out of the top 10 as Retribution, Affliction, and Balance moved ahead of it. Fury Warrior dropped to the bottom alongside Frost Mage, with Feral Druid remaining in that group.
Marksmanship also leads direct boss damage
Marksmanship’s strongest result comes from direct damage against bosses, where it climbed three positions to take first place from Rogue and Warrior specializations. That result helps explain why its overall performance is stronger than its population would suggest.
Individual encounters still produce their own winners. Marksmanship nearly broke up the Rogue-heavy top three on Sszorak. Arms led The Twin Fangs, an encounter that favors cleave damage, while Warlock specializations remained close behind. The Coiled Altar featured multiple Warlock, Death Knight, and Rogue specializations in its top 10.
Assassination Rogue continued to dominate Ula’tek, helped by the increased damage available during the boss’s heart phases. Its lead also matches the pattern seen in the World First kill logs. Nymrissa’s inclusion in the wider raid data gives the Lair boss a direct role in the overall rankings rather than treating it as a separate comparison.
Mythic data is growing, but still early
Mythic participation increased quickly in Week 3, although the sample remains much smaller than Heroic. The leading Heroic specialization has more than 300,000 logs, while the same Mythic population chart has about 14,000. That is a major increase from roughly 3,500 the previous week, but it is still too early for the Mythic order to carry the same weight.
Demonology leads the Mythic all-percentiles damage chart, with Balance moving up four places into second. Frost Mage also performs much better in Mythic than in Heroic, reaching the top three and outperforming Arcane. Fury, Unholy, and Beast Mastery sit near the bottom, while Elemental Shaman improved and Retribution Paladin entered the top 10.
No class tuning took place during Week 3, so these movements came from player participation, gear, encounter performance, and the growing sample rather than a fresh balance pass. The raid did receive health and damage adjustments across Raid Finder, smaller raid groups, and Mythic encounters in the September 1 hotfixes, which is another reason to treat the logs as a time-stamped view rather than a final verdict.
Marksmanship’s lead is the clearest performance development, while Arcane remains the safer measure of what players are choosing in large numbers. Later logs may look different as groups continue progressing and the remaining raid wings open.
