Square Enix Wants Final Fantasy 7 to Continue Beyond the Remake Trilogy
A PAX West panel presented the remake project as a way to pass Final Fantasy 7 to a new generation, with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation scheduled for April 2027.
Square Enix is looking past the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, with a stated goal of keeping the wider FF7 universe active long after the current project ends. A slide shown at PAX West described the aim as expanding FF7’s future and turning it into “an IP with an ever-evolving future.”
At the From Reunion to Resolve panel during PAX West 2026, Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that the games were not simply a remake of a classic. He described the trilogy as “an effort to pass Final Fantasy 7 onto the next generation” and said, “We want to make this a work that creates new fans 20 or even 30 years from now.” The comments came through a translator during the PAX West panel video.
Final Fantasy 7’s next chapter is still undefined
The slide points toward a long-term plan for the franchise, but it does not name a new game, film, or other project beyond the current remake work. Its wording leaves room for Square Enix to expand the setting in several directions rather than treating the trilogy as the final stop for Cloud and the rest of the cast.
That approach would build on Final Fantasy 7’s history. The 1997 game was followed by spin-off titles and an animated sequel movie, giving Square Enix several ways to revisit the world outside the main story. Hamaguchi’s comments suggest that the publisher sees the remake trilogy as another foundation for that kind of continued expansion, with the added goal of introducing the series to players who may not have experienced the original.
The current roadmap ends with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final game in the trilogy, which is scheduled for April 2027 alongside its two DLC packs. Square Enix has not announced anything beyond that package, so the PAX West presentation is a statement of direction rather than confirmation of a specific post-trilogy release.
