Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s physical edition will require an internet connection and an extra download before it can be played. The requirement applies to the game’s physical releases instead of only post-launch updates.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth each shipped physically on two PlayStation discs, with the launch versions’ game data included before later updates. Revelation will use a single disc or cartridge for its physical releases, which means the package will not contain everything needed to start the game.
For PS5 and Xbox Series X, the Square Enix product page includes a clear disclaimer: “An internet connection is required to download additional game data in order to play the physical version of the game.”
Square Enix has not explained how much data will be stored on those discs. It is still unclear whether they will contain a playable portion that the download completes or function mainly as an unlock for a full digital install.
Switch 2 has a more definite setup. Its physical release will use a Game-Key Card like the previous two entries, so the entire game will need to be downloaded. Square Enix lists 130 GB of required storage for that version, while the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S storage requirements have not been confirmed.
Square Enix previously revealed the game’s April 8, 2027 release date in a trailer.
PS5 discs can hold a maximum of 100 GB. With the full game planned to exceed that limit, a self-contained PS5 release would have needed at least two discs, as happened with the earlier entries. The single-disc edition will instead rely on downloaded data.
The decision also comes before PlayStation’s planned move away from new game discs. PlayStation has said it will stop manufacturing discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028, several months after Revelation’s scheduled launch.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi previously said Square Enix was still discussing the exact product lineup for Revelation in an earlier interview about its physical edition. The new announcement confirms that a physical release is coming, but the contents of the PS5 and Xbox discs remain unclear.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2 and PC on April 8, 2027, concluding the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
