Metro 2039 Is Coming on February 4, 2027

The first console gameplay footage was captured on PlayStation 5 Pro at 60 FPS in Performance Mode, with ray tracing support planned for Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro.

Metro 2039 will launch on Feb. 4, 2027, for PC and consoles. Some territories, including Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, are listed for Feb. 5 availability.

Deep Silver and 4A Games previously moved the single-player first-person shooter out of its earlier 2026 target and into February 2027. PC versions are listed on Steam and the Epic Games Store, while console listings are available for PlayStation and Xbox.

Alongside the release date, 4A Games released the first console gameplay trailer. It follows The Stranger through a ruined apartment block in post-apocalyptic Moscow, highlighting combat, environmental detail, and changes to the 4A Engine since 2019’s Metro Exodus.

Captured on PlayStation 5 Pro at 60 FPS in Performance Mode, the footage offers a console-specific look at the upcoming shooter. Launch details also confirm a 60 FPS Performance Mode with ray tracing support for Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro. 4A Games says Metro 2039 was designed around ray tracing from the beginning, making it the first game in the series built with that technology as a foundation.

PS5 Pro gameplay was also highlighted in PlayStation’s same-day presentation post.

Deep Silver and 4A Games plan to share more information about the game’s technology, specifications, and performance modes before the February 2027 release.

A tighter return to Moscow’s Metro

Set in 2039, the story returns to the Moscow Metro roughly 25 years after the original Metro novels and five to six years after Metro Exodus, as outlined on the official Metro 2039 page.

The project was first revealed on April 16, 2026, during Xbox First Look. That presentation showed the game’s radioactive Moscow setting and established a survival-shooter direction built around combat, scarce resources, and environmental storytelling.

Unlike Exodus, which used a more open structure, Metro 2039 is built around a tighter campaign that spends most of its time in tunnels and ruined parts of Moscow. Surface areas remain dangerous rather than becoming the default setting, with the poisoned outdoors serving as both a threat and a possible battleground.

Survival-focused first-person combat, resource management, exploration, stealth, and environmental storytelling remain central. Early footage leans into low-light corridors, flickering rails, Russian announcements, mutants, and human enemies, while washed-out skies and poisoned sunsets keep the surface just as hostile as the tunnels.

Hunter’s Novoreich faces the Stranger

Hunter, first introduced in Metro 2033, returns in a drastically different position. Once known as a legendary Spartan and stoic warrior, he now rules the entire network as the authoritarian head of Novoreich.

Novoreich is built on propaganda, fear, and strict control. Hunter’s regime appears to be using the Metro as a launch point for a new war on the surface, putting the returning Spartan on a direct collision course with the game’s protagonist.

The Stranger’s return to the tunnels

The Stranger is the playable character, a man living in the radioactive wilderness outside Moscow. Violent waking nightmares drive him back toward tunnels he abandoned, where his return brings him into conflict with Hunter’s regime.

His modified helmet and gas mask are designed for surface travel, and the equipment suggests he may be a veteran who cut ties with Metro leadership. That personal history places his struggle against Hunter’s authoritarian vision for humanity at the center of the new story.

With a firm February 4 release date and a first look at console performance, Metro 2039 is taking shape as a more focused return to the series’ tunnels. Share your thoughts in the comments and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
