Total War: Warhammer 40,000 May Make Space Marines Answer to the Imperium
The upcoming strategy game is testing ways for Planetary Defense Forces and Astra Militarum troops to support Space Marine campaigns.
Space Marine campaigns in Total War: Warhammer 40,000 may demand restraint as well as conquest. Creative Assembly is considering an Imperial reputation system that could punish players for building too much power or appearing to create an independent empire.
The idea fits the game’s unusual faction structure. Historical Total War factions generally represent separate nations, but the Space Marines and Astra Militarum are branches of the same Imperial military. During a Gamescom demo, the Ultramarines found Planetary Defense Force soldiers in their settlement garrisons. Those troops defended the settlements, but they were separate from the units available to recruit as a Space Marine faction.
That separation may not remain absolute once players earn enough support from local authorities. Dave Petry, Creative Assembly’s battle product owner, told PC Gamer in a Gamescom hands-on report that cooperation with planetary forces and governors would be central to helping Space Marines operate as the Imperium’s spearhead.
Creative Assembly has been testing a concept in which that support would let players bring additional units into their battles. Planetary Defense Force soldiers or Astra Militarum troops could potentially fight alongside the Space Marines, although the studio has not confirmed how the system will work in the finished game.
The demo showed a limited version of that relationship. In both medium and massive battles, Astra Militarum units were already fighting Orks when the Space Marines arrived. The allied soldiers could not be controlled, so the presentation did not establish whether Imperial support will eventually give players direct command over those forces.
A possible reputation system could limit Space Marine expansion
Petry also described a reputation mechanic that would make a Space Marine commander answer to the wider Imperium. Players would need to work with Imperial factions while avoiding actions that make their campaign look too much like an attempt to build an empire or become too powerful.
Creative Assembly plans to fill the galaxy with more Imperial factions and other threats over time. The studio has already teased additional Space Marine chapters, including the Space Wolves, along with xenos enemies such as Genestealer cults.
One expanding sandbox instead of a trilogy
These factions and relationships are planned for one long-running sandbox rather than a series of separate games. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is due in 2027, with its first release intended to provide the foundation for later additions to the setting.
