Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Will Let Players Solve Its Open World With Magic

Kaatri can combine spells with scenery, weather, and environmental objects, while quests ask players to follow clues instead of waypoint markers.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is building its open world around a simple idea. Magic should be a toolkit rather than a set of fixed answers. The upcoming third-person, single-player action-adventure will let Kaatri use spells, rituals, and the surrounding world to fight monsters, protect herself, and solve problems. It is planned for Xbox Series X|S in 2027.

An Xbox Wire preview from Gamescom 2026 showed a hands-off demo built around that philosophy. Roughly a dozen spells appeared during the presentation, but their possible combinations made the magic system feel much broader than a simple list of combat abilities.

The game had already received a nearly 10-minute gameplay showcase at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, as our Gamescom gameplay showcase coverage detailed. This newer look focused more closely on how Kaatri’s powers can affect combat, traversal, and the world around her.

Spells can solve more than combat

Kaatri begins as a swordmaster before receiving the powers of a D&D warlock from a less-than-trustworthy patron. That setup gives her both melee weapons and spellcasting, although swordplay appeared to serve mainly as cleanup after magic had already created an opening during the demo.

Telekinesis showed how flexible that approach can be. Kaatri could throw pieces of scenery at enemies, raise a boulder to block an arrow trap, pull water from a pond to put out a fire, or combine the spell with Black Tentacle to create a path across a chasm. None of those uses treats the spell as a single-purpose button.

The same situations can support other answers. Eldritch Blast could handle the enemies, Misty Step could bypass the arrow trap or fire, and Otherworldly Leap could carry Kaatri over the dangerous gap. The demo made room for players to test their own solutions instead of treating every obstacle as a puzzle with one approved answer.

Clues replace waypoint trails

Invoke Studios is carrying that freedom into the quest design. Kaatri will not simply follow a chain of waypoints from one story scene to the next. In towns, she will need to speak with villagers, notice unusual activity, and collect enough information to understand what deserves her attention.

One example began with bloody drag marks leading behind an open door. The discovery was not marked for the player, and interacting with it required walking directly up to the doorway. Finding it opened a Mystery, the game’s take on sidequests built around gathering information and uncovering what happened rather than following a marker to the next cutscene.

Rituals can change the battlefield

Rituals push the idea even further by spending resources to alter the world itself. In one sequence, Kaatri used Downpour to turn a sunny day into a violent storm. She then cast Witch Bolt at a metal pole behind a group of enemies instead of targeting them directly. The rain and metal carried the electricity through the entire group.

Spell combinations, physical objects, weather, and hidden clues all work together to give Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons a clear identity. The game is planned for Xbox Series X|S in 2027, and its strongest idea may be that players are expected to bring their own solutions to Kaatri’s journey.
