Fable’s First Hands-On Put Melee, Magic, and Ranged Combat to the Test
Playground Games' Gamescom 2026 demo used the quest "Mud and Death" to show how 7 spells and 2 ranged weapons support different combat builds ahead of the February 23, 2027 launch.

Fable‘s combat centers on switching between heavy melee attacks, ranged weapons, and magic without stopping to sort through complicated menus. During Gamescom 2026, press and creators received their first chance to play a combat-focused demo, with two runs using different loadouts. An Xbox Wire hands-on published on August 26 detailed how Playground Games is building those options into the reboot.
Following Fable’s first gameplay presentation, the new demo provided a closer look at what happens when the Hero is actually under pressure. The quest, titled “Mud and Death,” sends the Hero and Heroes’ Guild leader Humphry into a mine that was once flooded and is now packed with ghosts and skeletons.
Melee favors heavy hits and quick counters
Both playthroughs used the two-handed Bower Hammer. It trades speed for raw force, allowing the Hero to defeat weaker enemies with a single blow and deal with armored foes more comfortably. Its wide swing can hit several enemies at once, while a charged attack sends the Hero spinning across the room for a sequence of strikes.
The hammer is not the only answer when enemies close in. Dodging and parrying are both available, and a well-timed parry can knock a skeleton’s head loose. The damaged enemy staggers, becomes easier to counter, and can lose accuracy even if the Hero does not finish it immediately. Weapon-specific finishers add another layer of style to the close-range attacks.
Seven spells give the Hero plenty of options
The demo took place partway through the game, so the Hero already had a full spell selection. Holding RT and pressing one of the ABXY buttons casts the spell assigned to that slot, after which it enters a cooldown.
The available magic covered direct damage, crowd control, movement, and a little classic Fable mischief:
- Fireball can interrupt an enemy quickly or be charged into a larger explosion.
- Lightning strikes one target and can chain to nearby enemies.
- Blades summons phantom daggers that are useful against threats at a distance.
- Lift pulls several enemies into the air. The suspended group can then be hit with ranged attacks or Lightning, while casting Lift again slams them back to the ground.
- Rush teleports the Hero behind a target for a surprise melee strike. It can also provide a vertical route toward enemies such as archers.
- Push knocks enemies away from the Hero and can pair well with Rush near ledges.
- Befowl turns people into chickens, leaving them harmless for a short time. Using it on an undead enemy creates an undead chicken instead.

Choosing spells can push a loadout toward ranged attacks, close combat, evasive movement, or area-of-effect damage. Magic can also cover weaknesses created by the player’s weapon choices, so there is room to build around a preferred approach instead of treating spells as a separate menu of bonus attacks.
Ranged weapons reward careful aim
The two demo runs also featured different ranged weapons. The Deepwood Bow draws more slowly but offers high accuracy, making it a good choice for opening a fight by shooting skeletons in the head before they reach the Hero.
The Repeater Crossbow takes the opposite approach. Its bolts are weaker, but it fires them quickly enough to cut through groups of Wraiths. A short burst can clear those fragile flying enemies before the Hero turns back to stronger targets.
Ranged attacks are also the clearest way to target weak spots. Shooting an unarmored enemy in the leg can make it stumble, while the flying Lantern Keeper has a vulnerable lantern that is easier to hit with a bow or crossbow than with the demo’s spells.
Loadouts connect Strength, Skill, and Will
Playground Games’ take on the classic Strength, Skill, and Will structure lets those three combat paths work together during a single encounter. A spell can slow or scatter weaker enemies, a ranged shot can stagger a tougher opponent, and a melee finisher can end the exchange up close.
The controls keep the action moving. Abilities are assigned to clear controller inputs, with no need to pause and cycle through a long ability bar during a fight. The bigger decisions happen before combat, when players select weapons and spells that define how the Hero handles the next group of enemies.
Enemy groups can grow quickly
The mine’s enemies are designed to pressure different parts of the Hero’s toolkit. Hollow Folk are Fable’s skeleton enemies, and the demo included melee, ranged, and armored versions. Armored Hollow Folk are immune to ranged attacks, while every variant can be dismembered when the relevant body part is not protected. Losing a limb does not stop them from fighting.
Wraiths are fast, flying ghosts with little health but plenty of disruptive potential. They can appear inside other Hollow Folk during a fight, creating more enemies to manage. Defeating the host does not end the threat immediately, as the Wraith returns for another stage of the encounter.
The Lantern Keeper serves as the demo’s mini-boss. It is large and slow, but it can fly, breathe fire through an unblockable ranged attack, launch explosive projectiles, and summon Wraiths. Its large health bar makes it a fight where targeting the lantern and controlling the surrounding enemies both matter.
Because enemies can introduce even more enemies into the room, a small battle can become crowded in a hurry. The Lantern Keeper encounter kept that pressure high, with large groups appearing alongside the boss and its summoned Wraiths.
Fable will launch on February 23, 2027, with Premium Edition early access beginning February 18. The game will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and cloud, and it will be included with Game Pass. Xbox Play Anywhere will also support playing on console and PC at no additional cost.
