Tarae: The Unbound mixes Eastern dark fantasy with matchlock-firing ARPG combat
Boundary is developing the action RPG for Krafton, with six Seekers, more than 80 bosses, and builds shaped by Five Elements, Yin and Yang, karma, and reincarnation.
Tarae: The Unbound is bringing a very different flavor to the action RPG formula. The game was revealed through a Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live montage, showing a dark fantasy world shaped by Eastern mythology, Buddhist temples, strange monsters, and a rather entertaining matchlock-wielding gunner.
The announcement trailer gives a quick look at Tarae’s top-down combat and setting, with player characters cutting through groups of enemies in snowy ruins and temple-like locations. Its creatures have stretched, unsettling features inspired by East Asian monster illustrations, offering a sharp contrast to the demons, cultists, and other familiar enemies that fill many fantasy ARPGs.
Boundary is developing the game, while Krafton is publishing it. Tarae: The Unbound is planned for PS5 as well as PC. The game’s Steam page describes a setting built around Eastern myth, folklore, and traditional aesthetics, with beauty placed alongside darkness and brutality.
Players will take the role of one of six Seekers, each working to restore the cycle of reincarnation. The game is expected to pair their journey with large enemy hordes and more than 80 bosses, giving players plenty of tougher encounters beyond the regular crowds.
One of Tarae’s most memorable class concepts is an old man carrying a matchlock gun. The weapon appears to fire rapid bursts of explosive firebombs, which is not exactly the slow, careful firearm experience history class might have promised. Still, watching an elderly gunslinger turn a battlefield into a fireworks display is a hard idea to ignore.
Build customization will draw from several parts of the game’s setting. Boundary says the Five Elements, the balance of Yin and Yang, karma, and the cycle of reincarnation will affect leveling, equipment, and combat style. Choices made within a single class are also meant to lead to different builds, although the developer has not explained the full system yet.
Tarae: The Unbound does not have a release date at this time, but the game can already be wishlisted on Steam. For ARPG players who want something beyond another march through gothic crypts and demon-infested wastelands, its Eastern fantasy setting, large boss roster, and unusual Seeker premise may be exactly the change of pace the genre needs.
