The Defiant Trailer Tells a Different WWII Story From China’s Battlefields
Hangzhou Hoothanes is developing the FPS with 4Divinity, with a single-player campaign and co-op play planned alongside its historical focus.

The Defiant appeared during Gamescom 2026’s Opening Night Live with a new gameplay trailer centered on a rarely depicted part of World War II: the Chinese battlefields. Hangzhou Hoothanes is developing the realistic first-person shooter, while 4Divinity is handling publishing.
The project is aiming for a harsh, historically grounded portrayal of the conflict. Rather than treating the war as a collection of polished action scenes, The Defiant is built around the violence and atrocities experienced in that region during the Second World War.
The Defiant Puts Its WWII Story First
At a glance, the game may remind some players of Battlefield, especially with its focus on authentic weapons and cinematic wartime action. The Defiant is planned to include dozens of period weapons, a single-player campaign, and co-operative gameplay.
Traditional multiplayer is not the project’s current focus. Hangzhou Hoothanes is instead putting the narrative at the center, using battles and stories from a front that has received far less attention in games.
Behind Enemy Lines in China
The campaign takes players through snowy forests, guarded roads, and dangerous villages behind enemy lines. Set during China’s War of Resistance against the Japanese invasion, the story follows ordinary soldiers and resistance fighters caught in an extraordinary struggle.
Those hostile surroundings and isolated settlements provide the backdrop for a campaign about surviving under constant pressure, rather than another familiar modern battlefield.
Rifles, Pistols, and Machine Guns
Combat will feature rifles, pistols, and machine guns, with historical firearms including the Hanyang Rifle, Mauser Military Pistol, and MP18 Submachine Gun. The developers have also framed the weapons as more than simple tools of war, presenting them as relics tied to the memories of battles fought nearly a century ago.
The Defiant is currently listed on Steam for wishlisting, giving PC players a way to keep track of the project as development continues. 4Divinity has not announced a release date or estimated launch window.
The trailer offers an early look at what could become an unusual World War II shooter, particularly because it comes from a Chinese development team and focuses on a part of the conflict that is rarely shown in the genre.
