The Witcher 3’s Songs of the Past Gets a Full Reveal Before Its Free Remaster Arrives

The remaster will overhaul combat, traversal, Signs, Roach, monsters, and the skill tree before Geralt's 2027 return to Letten with a chain whip.

CD Projekt used Gamescom’s Opening Night Live to give The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past a full reveal, presenting the expansion as a bridge between The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Witcher 4. The paid expansion will continue Geralt of Rivia’s story in 2027, although a specific release date has not been announced. The presentation also introduced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered, which will launch on September 29, 2026.

The remaster will be free to existing owners on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, while a native Nintendo Switch 2 version will launch on the same day. CD Projekt’s official Remastered announcement also outlines a project that goes well beyond visual improvements.

Combat, movement, traversal, Witcher Signs, Roach’s handling, monster behavior, and the skill tree will all be adjusted. The package will also include transmogrification, additional finishers, and an expanded photo mode.

Existing The Witcher 3 owners will receive Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine at no extra cost, even if they never purchased either expansion. Both expansions became available immediately after the Gamescom announcement instead of waiting for the September 29 remaster launch.

Geralt Returns for Songs of the Past

The expansion was introduced through a CG trailer featuring the return of Geralt of Rivia, with Doug Cockle providing his voice. As the third and final The Witcher 3 expansion, Songs of the Past is the first full expansion since Blood and Wine released in 2016, effectively bringing the original game’s development run to an end. It follows roughly 12 years after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first launched.

Geralt’s next adventure will take him to Letten, a new region shaped by rural traditions, folklore, harvests, and festivals. The area looks peaceful on the surface while hiding a darker threat underneath, and the expansion will introduce new monsters, returning characters, and new abilities.

Geralt will also have a new weapon in his arsenal: a chain whip that can pull enemies toward him. It is the first weapon of its type to appear in The Witcher games.

Fool’s Theory is developing Songs of the Past with CD Projekt. The studio’s team includes developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3. The DLC will launch sometime in 2027 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Geralt remains the protagonist of the expansion even as Ciri leads The Witcher 4. The upcoming RPG will begin a new chapter for the franchise, while Songs of the Past brings Geralt back before that next game arrives. The Witcher 4’s 2028 target gives that connection some context. The Witcher 3 has sold more than 65 million copies.

Both Witcher 3 Projects Will Be Playable at Gamescom

Gamescom attendees can try a playable version of Songs of the Past at one of the event’s biggest show-floor exhibits. CD Projekt will show both the Remastered version and the expansion at its Cologne booth from August 26 through 30, giving visitors a chance to spend time with the projects instead of only watching their trailers. The studio will also hold REDstreams during the event, with more looks at both projects planned.
