Golden Axe’s Animated Series Will Hit Paramount+ on September 16, 2026
The show follows Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to face Death Adder, with an underprepared adventurer complicating the quest.
Golden Axe is getting an animated series, and Paramount+ will begin streaming it on September 16, 2026. The show is based on SEGA’s 1989 arcade classic and its Genesis-era brawler follow-up.
The trailer takes the fantasy beat-’em-up into irreverent comedy territory, with plenty of game references packed into the action. Fans will spot a character selection screen, familiar potions, and the small purple mounts that have been part of Golden Axe’s identity for decades. Tyris Flare even explains the heroes’ plan in classic beat-’em-up fashion: “We’re going to do what we do best. Face a series of progressively harder enemies until we have a big final battle with Death Adder. And then we kill him for good.” Another joke has a character shouting at a large enemy that it had better be the final boss instead of yet another mini-boss.
At the center of the story are Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead. The three warriors reunite to protect Yuria from Death Adder, a giant villain who keeps finding ways to return. Their mission becomes even messier when Hampton Squib joins the group, voiced by Danny Pudi. He wants to become a hero and has spent his entire life dreaming about going on a quest, but his confidence is doing far more work than his actual experience.
The Golden Axe cast brings some familiar names
Liam McIntyre will voice Ax Battler. McIntyre is also playing Logan in the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine. Matthew Rhys will voice Gilius, while Lisa Gilroy takes the role of Tyris.
The cast also includes Carl Tart, who voices the humanoid panther Chronos “Evil” Lait.
Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler co-created the series. McMahan is known for Star Trek: Lower Decks and Solar Opposites, while Chandler is associated with American Dad and the Napoleon Dynamite animated series and serves as the show’s showrunner. That creative background is easy to feel in the trailer’s fast jokes and self-aware approach to the Golden Axe world.
The animated project had been discussed as far back as April 2024, when Comedy Central announced a 10-episode order, and was initially planned for the network. Paramount+ is now the announced streaming home, giving Ax and the crew a very different kind of comeback from the arcade cabinet.
Whether the jokes land will depend on how much patience viewers have for the show’s style, but the game references are clear and the core cast is all here. For a series that appeared from nowhere, Golden Axe at least knows exactly which pieces fans will want to see.
