PlayStation’s August 17 State of Play revealed more of Phantom Blade Zero, including its weapon options, difficulty modes, Wulin setting, and Donnie Yen’s work on the project. The game is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 5 on October 29, 2026, while the August 17 State of Play recap notes October 28 for the US and select regions.
The State of Play video is available below.
The presentation followed the August 17 State of Play announcement, which had promised a closer look at combat, character builds, and the game’s dark wuxia world.
Weapons and accessories open up different builds
Phantom Blade Zero gives Soul a broad arsenal to work with. The game features more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons known as Phantom Edges. Weapons can be upgraded and paired with accessories, allowing players to create different approaches to combat.
Those options cover more than close-range fighting. Players can attack from a distance, call on summons during battles, or change their setup to deal with assassins, enemies consumed by darkness, and martial arts masters. Defeating certain foes can also expand Soul’s arsenal.
Changing direction will not mean losing all that investment. Upgraded weapons can be reforged, returning their materials so they can be used on another weapon or build.
The Wulin connects side quests to Soul’s journey
The Wulin is a dangerous world filled with conflict and hidden motives. As Soul travels through it, he will meet citizens who need help, and completing some side quests can open new story paths.
These encounters also add context to the events that set Phantom Blade Zero in motion. Secrets are scattered throughout the Wulin, giving Soul more reasons to look beyond the main road while he searches for the truth.
Three difficulty modes define the challenge
Wayfarer mode is aimed at players who want to focus on the story. Those looking for more pressure can choose Hellwalker, which features more advanced and adaptive enemy intelligence.
At the harshest end is Sixty-Six Days, a mode intended for players who want a much tougher action game experience. The three options give players room to choose how demanding Soul’s journey will be.
Donnie Yen brings Mó Yuan to life
Donnie Yen’s involvement goes beyond a traditional acting role. He serves as the game’s Creative Consultant and brings Mó Yuan to life through facial and motion capture.
Yen’s likeness, performance, and kung fu guidance helped bring the feel of martial arts cinema into the game. Players will cross paths with Mó Yuan during Soul’s journey, adding another connection between the game’s story and its real-world kung fu influence.
