A Marvel Rivals config exploit is letting players dodge losses mid-match

The apparent workaround involves adding files during a match, which can cause the game to cancel the session after its cheat detection reacts.

Marvel Rivals players appear to be using the game’s config files to force losing matches to end without a defeat being added to their records. The workaround has drawn attention because it can turn a bad game into a free reset once a team starts falling behind.

How the config-file exploit cancels matches

The method seems to involve leaving a match temporarily, dragging config files into the game folder while the match is still underway, and then loading back in. The altered files can trigger the game’s cheat detection, causing the match to be canceled instead of finishing normally.

Streamer LytePk said players were “intentionally abusing the cheating detection system” in an August 13 post, adding that it had happened five times during the stream that day. The result described by players is especially useful to anyone trying to avoid a loss: the match disappears through an automatic cancellation, with no reported rank punishment attached. Players on the winning side can lose the result as well, seeing an otherwise secured victory erased when an opponent triggers the cancellation.

Config editing did not begin as a way to manipulate match results. Players initially used the files to improve frame rates or help Marvel Rivals run better on PC. NetEase largely tolerated those changes because they were not automatically harmful, but some players later found ways to strip maps down to their bare visual elements. With less scenery and visual clutter on screen, enemy heroes became easier to spot during team fights, creating a competitive advantage.

NetEase addressed that wider problem in a warning shared on Reddit. The developer said players caught using modded configs to improve performance or optimization could face penalties such as temporary suspensions. In practice, though, the response has often stayed closer to an automatic game cancellation, partly because config edits can also be used for less harmful performance tweaks.

A separate August 13 post with video evidence showed a player named Murder Rate leaving during a match in which their team was spawn-camping the opponents. Teammates reportedly wrote “gg game cancelled” in chat before the player returned and the game ended after detecting cheats. The clip presents the exact outcome that has players concerned: a config change can interrupt a match at the worst possible moment without producing the loss the player was facing.

NetEase’s existing warning covers modded configurations, but the cancellation behavior leaves room for players to abuse the system before stronger penalties are applied. The developer has not announced a broader response to this specific loss-avoidance method.
