Monsters Are Coming! Will Arrive on Xbox Series X|S on August 6 With The Joker

The launch update adds The X-Fortress Townhall, Weekly Challenges, stackable modifiers, and a Codex for clearer build decisions.

Monsters Are Coming! is scheduled to arrive on Xbox Series X|S on August 6, 2026, alongside an update packed with new ways to build, adapt, and test a moving city. The details come from the Xbox Wire announcement.

The tower-survivor roguelite sends players across a dangerous world while they gather resources, expand their city, place defensive towers, and try to reach the Ark. The Xbox release will include the improvements and balancing work added since the game launched, as well as several new systems aimed at players who want tougher runs.

A launch trailer accompanies the console release.

The Joker Brings Random Weapons and Upgrades

The update introduces The Joker, a Trickster Hero who throws carefully planned builds into the nearest monster-infested ditch.

Each run begins with a random weapon. During the run, chests can contain Joker’s Tricks, which may swap the player’s equipped weapons or grant unpredictable stat upgrades. The result is a Hero built around adapting to whatever the game hands over instead of following one fixed setup.

Players can keep two or three weapons while deciding which one will anchor the run. If a better option appears, the other weapons can be replaced to chase stronger bonuses. Collecting badges also gives The Joker another way to build power when the weapon setup is already working.

The X-Fortress Rewards Careful City Layouts

The X-Fortress joins the Townhall roster with a layout focused on adjacency and placement. Buildings positioned near the center can affect the wider city, giving careful arrangements a larger payoff.

The Townhall also has four special tower slots. A tower placed in one of them activates its effects three times, so choosing the right structures for those spaces can define an entire run.

The grid is less suited to long streets, which makes tower placement and nearby support buildings more important. Players can replace central supports as the city develops, trading an early boost for a stronger late-run arrangement.

Weekly Challenges Add Shared Rules

Weekly Challenges will give players a fresh setup whenever the leaderboard refreshes. Every challenge can use its own map, Hero, Townhall, and modifiers, while scores remain separate from the global leaderboard.

That format puts everyone under the same conditions and creates a direct test of who can get the most from the week’s restrictions. Players can also activate multiple Challenges at once for harsher runs and higher score potential.

The update adds several new modifiers:

  • Inflation raises shop prices at every Shelter.
  • Small Hangar limits Rock storage.
  • Rage increases the damage monsters deal to the City.
  • Erosion makes rerolls cost a percentage of the City’s HP.
  • Fracture gives buildings life and allows them to be temporarily destroyed.

Challenges now affect the final score, with harder combinations offering a greater scoring opportunity.

The Codex Explains the Game’s Systems

As more families, effects, keywords, synergies, and status effects enter the game, the new Codex gives players a place to check what everything does.

The Codex menu in Monsters Are Coming!

The Codex can be opened from the pause menu and progression menu. Entries are also available from shops and level-up screens when players hover over buildings, allowing them to review a mechanic before committing to a build choice.

That extra information should make it easier to understand why a combination succeeds, or why a promising city suddenly turns into monster food.

Ice Builds and Difficulty Scores Are Changing

The update will also change how the Ice family performs, especially in Endless Mode. The statue transformation chance will apply only to enemies below 30% of their maximum life. Frostbite will receive a stronger effect on that transformation chance to offset the adjustment.

Difficulty will also multiply the total score rather than adding a percentage bonus. Normal difficulty will use a x1 multiplier, while Nightmare will use x1.5. The change gives players a clearer reason to accept more dangerous conditions when chasing a higher score.

With The Joker adding unpredictability, The X-Fortress rewarding tidy layouts, and Weekly Challenges setting shared rules, the August 6 release will give Xbox Series X|S players plenty of ways to keep each city moving.
