PS5 Beta Firmware Is Now Available to Testers With Better PSSR by Default

Sony has made a new PS5 system software beta available to enrolled testers, giving participants an early look at changes planned for the console. The firmware can be downloaded and installed now through the beta program, but it is not a general release for every PS5 owner.

The biggest change affects the PS5 Pro. The Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting now turns on by default after the beta firmware is installed. With the option active, enhanced PSSR will also be used by games that currently support the older version of the image-reconstruction technology.

That means compatible games do not need a separate update for the newer PSSR behavior to take effect. Sony says the setting should provide a sharper and clearer image, although it can be disabled through the console’s video output settings.

Enhanced PSSR reaches older supported games

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, better known as PSSR, launched in November 2024 as one of the PS5 Pro’s main image-reconstruction features. Its early results were not always well received, with image-quality problems reported in games including Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Silent Hill 2, and Alan Wake 2.

PSSR 2.0 arrived in March 2026 alongside Resident Evil Requiem and has since been added to more games. More than 100 titles supported the first version, but not every one received a game-specific PSSR 2.0 update. Sony introduced the manual override in March to cover that gap; the beta now changes the default behavior so the newer processing is used across supported older PSSR games without requiring players to find the setting themselves.

A new Bluetooth option targets esports venues

The beta also introduces a Bluetooth switch for PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles in certain countries and regions. The option is found under Settings > Accessories > General > Advance Settings and is intended to help manage controller connections at esports venues and similar locations.

There are important tradeoffs when Bluetooth is turned off. The console cannot be placed into rest mode, and HDMI Link will not work while the setting is active. Sony says the function should not be used for any other purpose.

The remaining change is a general improvement to system software performance and stability. Sony has not indicated that the beta contains any other user-facing features beyond the PSSR default and Bluetooth options.

PS5 Beta Firmware Patch Notes

The notes focus on the new default for enhanced PSSR, the regional Bluetooth controls, and system software stability. Here is the complete changelog:

• We’ve turned on Enhance PSSR Image Quality as a default setting. When you update the system software, this setting automatically turns on. When you enable this feature, enhanced PSSR is used even for games that support the previous version of PSSR so you can enjoy a sharper and clearer visual experience.
  • To turn off this setting, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality.
  • This feature is available only on PS5 Pro.
• We’ve changed the following features for PS5 consoles and PS5 Pro consoles in certain countries or regions.
  • If you go to Settings > Accessories > General > Advance Settings and select Turn Off Bluetooth, you’re no longer able to put your console into rest mode. Additionally, HDMI link is no longer supported when you select Turn Off Bluetooth.
  • The Turn Off Bluetooth function is for managing controller connections at esports venues and similar locations. Do not use this feature for any other purpose.
