Dark Sun Will Return to Dungeons & Dragons in 2027 With a Mature Rating
The February 2027 revival will include three books, a Dungeon Master screen, and a map pack set in the harsh world of Athas.
Dark Sun will return to Dungeons & Dragons in February 2027 as a Mature product, putting one of the tabletop franchise’s harshest settings back in the spotlight. The books will use shrink-wrap packaging in game stores because of their violent and adult content.
The revival has also been described as Dungeons & Dragons’ first setting aimed at adults aged 18 and over. Its material is expected to warn readers about violence, nudity, bloodshed, and sexuality, giving players a clearer indication of how far its content differs from the franchise’s more approachable fantasy adventures.
The setting takes place on Athas, a world separated from the wider Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. Arcane magic does not draw on the Weave or divine power. Instead, casting spells can drain life from the surrounding environment, helping explain why Athas has become a vast, ruined desert.
Dark Sun last appeared in the fourth edition of Dungeons & Dragons, though the setting originally debuted in 1991. Its return had been a sensitive subject during the fifth-edition era, particularly as real-world climate concerns made the setting’s devastated environment feel uncomfortably close to home. Wizards of the Coast announced the comeback at Gen Con 2026, with the new material carrying a Mature rating.
The announcement was accompanied by an animated reveal trailer presenting Dark Sun’s violent visual style and its blood-soaked, sun-baked world.
Three Books Will Form the Dark Sun Return
The 2027 release will be spread across three books. Edge of Oblivion will establish the setting with locations, lore, and a bestiary, while Blood and Power will provide player-focused material, including the new Psion class and subclasses. A Dark Sun-themed Player’s Handbook with new artwork will round out the core releases.
Wizards of the Coast also plans to release a Dungeon Master screen and a map pack alongside the books. The material will present Athas as a place where food and water are scarce, survival is difficult, and traditional heroic solutions do not always fit the world. The launch plans have also been described as including a related “Season of Survival” campaign offering, although further details have not been provided.
The Psion Joins Fifth Edition
The new Psion will use innate mental power to fight and cast spells. The official 2025 Psion playtest identifies Psionic Energy Dice and Psionic Spellcasting as key parts of the class. One previewed subclass also allows Psions to reshape their bodies, including turning their arms into lethal spikes. These details come from playtest material and could change before publication.
Athas Is a Brutal World
Dark Sun’s societies are controlled by Sorcerer Kings, powerful spellcasters who rule through oppressive regimes. They secretly seek to transform themselves into dragons. The setting has no gods and only one living dragon, Borys of Ebe, while familiar fantasy races can look very different from their usual portrayals. Halflings, for example, are depicted as cannibals, and some races have disappeared after genocidal wars.
There are still forces resisting the Sorcerer Kings. The Veiled Alliance works against them in cities across Athas, and Preservers have learned to cast magic without destroying as much life. The setting also includes rumors of mortals seeking to become Avangions, powerful magical beings that could offer Athas a path toward salvation.
The original setting’s depictions have also drawn criticism. That includes its portrayal of jungle-dwelling cannibal halflings and the stereotypes associated with them. In a 2023 video discussion, a former D&D producer described Dark Sun as “problematic in a lot of ways.” The new material has not yet explained how it will address those concerns.
Recent Unearthed Arcana playtests had already fueled speculation about a Dark Sun revival, with post-apocalyptic character options pointing toward the setting. The Psion playtest offered an even clearer connection because of the class’s long association with Dark Sun.
The Mature rating reflects the setting’s focus on blood, gore, violence, and adult themes. It also gives players a clear warning that this version of Dungeons & Dragons is aimed at a different audience than the franchise’s more approachable fantasy adventures.
