Black Flag Resynced Is Sending One Player Back to Assassin’s Creed Shadows

After roughly 15 hours in Ubisoft's Japan-set adventure, the player praised Naoe's stealth tools and castle raids while criticizing the story structure and base-building system.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced was expected to be one player’s favorite game of 2026, but the remake ended up pushing them back toward a game they had previously abandoned. After spending around three hours with Assassin’s Creed Shadows following its launch, they returned to Ubisoft’s Japan-set adventure and found far more to appreciate the second time around.

In a July 30 PCGamesN feature, the player described Black Flag Resynced as a brilliant remake, pointing to its storm effects, rogue waves, shanties, story, and tropical islands. The game’s sea-focused design was an especially strong draw, helped by the player’s personal connection to life on the ocean and time spent in the Caribbean.

That enthusiasm also led to a comparison between Black Flag Resynced and Shadows. Although online opinions tended to favor the remake, curiosity brought the player back to late-1500s Japan. The short return session quickly became a 15-hour playthrough.

Why Assassin’s Creed Shadows Finally Clicked

The world itself made the biggest difference. The player now sees Shadows as one of the best-looking games they have played, with Kyoto standing out as a city that feels busy and lived-in. Rather than rushing across the map, they often traveled on foot to take in the environments.

Naoe was another major reason for the change of heart. Her movement options suit stealth-focused play, with prone movement, grass concealment, grappling, double assassinations, and kunai attacks giving her a distinct feel compared with older entries in the series.

The castle and temple raids became the standout activity. The player had avoided similar raids in Odyssey and Valhalla, but completed five of them in Shadows. Sneaking through guarded areas, collecting loot, and chaining attacks through screens and openings made those missions feel tactile and rewarding.

Not Everything Works

Shadows still has systems that failed to hold the player’s attention. Base building, despite their experience with games such as The Sims and Second Life, did not feel closely connected to the main narrative. That made it difficult to see a reason to spend much time on it.

The central story also came across as difficult to follow. Several organizations and assassination targets are introduced, but the link between those objectives and Naoe’s revenge is not always clear. Side stories and smaller targets add content, yet the broader plot can lack a strong thread tying everything together.

Even with those complaints, the parts that worked made the return worthwhile. Black Flag Resynced rekindled interest in Assassin’s Creed, but Naoe’s stealth gameplay, the raids, and Shadows’ depiction of Japan ultimately kept this player engaged.
