Project Zomboid’s Build 42.20 Will Rework Knox Country on July 29

The stable update will overhaul seven towns, add two challenges, and bring the map to twice the surface area of Build 41.

Project Zomboid Build 42.20 will arrive on the public stable branch on July 29, 2026, bringing a large-scale revision of Knox Country and several changes to the game’s presentation. The Indie Stone shared the update through a Steam announcement, with more information also available in the studio’s Build 42 stable plans.

The map is the centerpiece of the release. The team wants Knox Country to feel more developed and consistent, with towns that have clearer identities and areas that appear to have existed long before the outbreak. Build 42.20 will rework Riverside, West Point, Rosewood, Fallas Lake, Muldraugh, Ekron, and Dixie.

The update follows the team’s work on the western side of the map, including Brandenburg, Ekron, and Irvington. The developers also used southern Muldraugh as a test area for a denser world-building style. Positive player feedback during the Unstable beta led to the expansion of the map-art team and the wider rollout of that approach.

What Build 42.20 changes

The refreshed areas will follow several visual rules. Each town will have its own style, buildings and houses will be individually designed, landscaping will connect properties more naturally, and special tiles will be added where needed.

The scope is much larger than a town-by-town facelift. Compared with Build 41, the map’s surface area has doubled. The art team has also added 1,400 buildings and 20,000 tiles, bringing the total tile count to 35,000.

Build 42 includes 400 procedural basements and 75 hand-built basements, along with new posters, wall decorations, lighting overlays, snow overlays, burned tile variations, 30-degree roofs, more window types, and crafting tiles. The wider map will also contain places such as an abandoned orphanage, a reworked logging compound, a new prison, and a boy scout camp.

Existing Challenge maps will rotate in and out with the update. “A Really CD DA” and “Winter is Coming” will return with improvements, while two new scenarios will become available: “Top of the World,” which starts survivors on a skyscraper, and “28 Seconds Later,” where the zombies can sprint.

A new look for the main menu

The Indie Stone also addressed the menu and loading-screen artwork used during the Build 42 Unstable launch. The studio said it removed those images after discovering AI-generated artifacts and stated that no AI has been used in its art process since then.

For the stable release, the main menu will use the game’s rendered visual style, similar to the look used for flyers, newspapers, and leaflets. The new title screen is an early version of a broader plan for the front-end, including changes to the spawn map and other interface elements.

The announcement also includes an interview with Art Director Ayrton Orio about the map’s direction and the growth of the art department. The related interview with MrAtomicDuck follows an earlier discussion with Design Director Christian Allen.

Build 42.20 will reach the public stable branch on July 29, giving players a chance to see the revised Knox Country for themselves. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
