Marvel will leave a long gap between Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars
Kevin Feige said Marvel wanted to avoid spreading its creative teams too thin while preparing its two next Avengers films and the projects that follow.
Marvel Studios will leave its theatrical schedule open between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, with Kevin Feige saying the studio wants to give its biggest projects more room instead of pushing out more films in the same window.
Marvel announced a new Ghost Rider movie starring Ryan Gosling and Black Panther 3 during its Hall H panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Neither film will arrive until 2028, creating a clear break between the two upcoming Avengers movies.
Feige explained the decision in an interview with Empire magazine, saying Marvel had been discussing a stronger focus on quality for some time.
“A lot of it is a strategy we’ve talked about for a while, of focusing on quality,” Feige said. “We always try to focus on quality, but when quantity is so much, you get spread thin. We didn’t want to be spread thin, and the Avengers is as important as it comes.”
He also described Secret Wars as more than a standalone conclusion. The film will help establish what comes next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which made the space around both Avengers projects especially important to the studio’s plans.
When the next Marvel movies will arrive
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027. That leaves no Marvel movie currently planned between the two releases.
The franchise will still have at least one major screen release during that stretch. Daredevil: Born Again season 3 is scheduled to arrive in March 2027, giving Marvel fans a new series while the theatrical schedule remains quiet.
Marvel’s next film is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will arrive on July 29 in the UK and July 31 in the US.
What Marvel has announced for 2028
Shawn Levy will direct the Ghost Rider movie, while Ryan Coogler will return behind the camera for Black Panther 3. David Jonsson will play T’Challa, the son of the original Black Panther, who was introduced during the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The next Black Panther film will follow Jonsson’s version of T’Challa as he grows up and comes of age. Marvel has revealed those two 2028 projects so far as part of its plans after Secret Wars.
The gap may look unusual for a studio that has often kept its release calendar packed, but Feige’s comments point to a more focused schedule around the Avengers films and the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic plans.
