Minecraft Java’s PC requirements look much higher, but the game did not suddenly get heavier

Minecraft Java Edition has new PC system requirements, but Microsoft is not warning players that the game suddenly became harder to run. The company updated its official specifications because the older figures no longer reflected the hardware needed for a good experience today.

The biggest change is memory. The recommended requirement is now 16 GB of RAM, while the minimum is 8 GB with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics. That is a large jump from the previously listed 2 GB minimum and 4 GB recommended figures. A May 2025 snapshot of the requirements shows the older recommendation, while another archived listing points to the 4 GB and 8 GB figures appearing in 2022.

The graphics targets have also moved forward. Microsoft now lists a GTX 950, Radeon RX 460, or Intel Arc A310 as minimum discrete options. Recommended play calls for an RTX 2060, Radeon RX 5600 XT, or Intel Arc A580, with 6 GB of VRAM. The RTX 2060 is an older card by current standards, so the recommendation still places Java Edition well below the demands of many new PC releases.

Microsoft explained the change on its Minecraft Java Edition system requirements page. Older computers may still launch the game, but the company said they can run into low frame rates, visual problems, long loading times, or performance below what players expect.

New Minecraft Java Edition PC requirements

The minimum target is 1080p at 30 frames per second using the Fast preset. The recommended target is 1080p at 60 frames per second with the Fancy preset.

The processor requirements are higher across both tiers as well. The recommended list now starts with the Core i5 12400, Ryzen 5 5600, or Apple M2 Pro, while the minimum list includes newer entry-level chips such as the Core i3 10100, Ryzen 3 3100, Snapdragon X, and Apple M1.

Microsoft’s message is less “buy new hardware immediately” and more “use these numbers as a clearer guide.” The company said that supporting hardware that no longer runs Java Edition well can limit behind-the-scenes improvements, so the revised specifications give it more room to modernize the game while setting clearer expectations for players.

Minecraft Java Edition remains relatively easy to run compared with current big-budget PC games. A system with 16 GB of RAM and an RTX 2060-class graphics card is still a very different requirement from the hardware listed for many recent releases.
